From the moment I heard the opening notes of Just Dance for the first time as a 15-year-old sitting in the back seat of her Taekwondo instructor's car on a trip to Burntisland, I fell in love with Lady Gaga. Her talent and shine upon this world left me in awe, and I had always hoped to see her make the transition to the Silver Screen. This movie is everything I had anticipated over the last 10 years and more. Every scene in this movie seems as though it came naturally to everyone involved, as if they were merely filming a day in the life of whoever is on screen at the time. With Mr. Cooper at the helm, it has become a clear contender for this year's Oscar nominations and deservedly so. The music has such passion in both lyrics and delivery, the story is compelling and emotional, and the cast could not have given a greater performance. Ms. Germanotta has succeeded where Madonna failed, by transitioning from global superstar to on-screen megastar. I like to be as honest and fair as possible when writing reviews, and I am desperately trying to recall if I found a single flaw with A Star Is Born. I did not.
I'm struggling to find a way to begin this review because of how awful this film is. I may have said in my title that this is 'The Room' for kids, but I wouldn't say that The Room was as bad as this. The Room actually has that one scene that is decent where Tommy Wiseau actually recounts an experience from his life. This has what I can only describe as a future lawsuit with Hanna Barbera (due to Cool Cat's likeness with Top Cat characters) whose father is a human who makes risqué comments to his cat wife that I would deem inappropriate for a children's film. Firstly, I would like to point out that the antagonist is the least realistic bully on the planet. Everyone experiences bullying at some point in their lives, and this is not like ANY bully that exist anywhere or has existed ever. Bullies don't stand behind your car cackling like a cartoon as they send you cyber hate mail. Secondly, Daddy Derek is creepy. If kids were to see their own fathers acting like this, they would know that their mother is probably suffering and that they will be his next victim. Lastly, Eric Estrada is looking so bloody awful that I had no idea it was him. I thought he had hit a low point when he appeared in that My Name is Earl episode, but this must be rock bottom. In conclusion, Tommy Wiseau is better than Derek Savage. I am a student who is currently studying childcare and on placement in a nursery, and I'd rather show them The Room than this as it would make more sense to them, myself and the other members of staff.
