I saw this movie when it was released, and stumbling through the reviews today I felt I had to write something, as I find it considerably undervalued.
For me, this movie hits a sweet spot of surprising comedy and insightful social commentary-something quite rare to pull off well. What makes it land so convincingly is that it always feels real, even in its more outlandish turns. The connection between the leads, and their individual portrayals of the characters, make them so relatable that the exaggerations in their circumstances become irrelevant. With a different cast, I think it could have easily slipped into buffoonery, but they strike the same elusive balance the best comedians manage in their specials, where they can make the audience laugh and reflect in equal measure.
I went to see it with a friend. I'm a therapist and single, so I found the couple dynamics brilliantly illustrated mainly from the perspective of my work, without being bogged down by personal musings. My friend is married, and while she also loved the movie, she left the theater preoccupied with the things she found mirrored on the screen from her own relationship. I think that's quite a feat for a comedy. If you enjoy dark humor and being left pondering this is an excellent use of your time.

I'm surprised this only has 6 reviews. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it is well made and it makes you stick to the screen. It is unpredictable, the actors' portrayal of the characters believable, the dialogue is natural, the pacing keeps you simmering, for its genre everything about it is above average. Don't expect in depth police procedure, a brilliant detective, high speed car races or anything in your face, it has emotion and thrills but in a more understated way. There are some aspects that ask us to suspend disbelief though not so much that it messes with the viewing experience, at least not for me.
After watching the first season I have to say I have never seen anything quite as beautiful on screen. For me this season was magical and perfect. Every single frameshot would make an exquisite painting.
There are not many words, but in their place there's wisdom, with its simplicity, simbolism and pause. It's not dialogue or action heavy (only 2/3 battle scenes), it has a sense of airiness, spaciousness, which I absolutely love, though I know it can be an acquired taste. I enjoy having the space to digest a scene before going into a new one, I find it wholesome and healthy somehow, it feels more fulfilling at the end, like the experience of watching seeps deeper inside me.
I loved everything they did visually (the shots, costumes, sets), the actors, the characters, the pace, music, the essence of each culture, with its particular beauty and limitations. It got me curious to read the Silmarillion, the book that inspired the script, and more about the LOTR lore.
For me this is a masterpiece that got woven into my being and I know I will watch it again and again, whenever I yearn for beauty. I hope they maintain their level of dedication, as every single person involved in creating this has been so far outstanding. I'm extremely grateful for their craftsmanship!
