  • "Don't spare the gristle"

Gregory Peck stars as the eponymous hero of this comic yarn one Henry Adams, who finds himself the worst for wear when he arrives in England. Having worked his passage on a maritime vessel from the United States of America.

Being particularly down at heel he naturally enough tries his luck, at the American Embassy in London. But to his great disappointment he isn't exactly welcomed with open arms.

Indeed the American Government has, gone out of its way to advertise the fact. That the Embassy is not there lend a helping hand, to any American citizen who happens to pass by.

To avoid and misunderstanding they have gone to the trouble and expense, of putting this sentiment in writing on a large display at the Embassy's entrance.

Mr Adams is forced to trudge the streets in a weary and destitute manner, until he is hailed by an elderly gentleman, from a window of an extremely well to do building.

The front door of which is opened by a liveried manservant, who escorts him into a type of lounge, where he is greeted by two well heeled elderly gentleman.

He is asked several questions and then given a letter, which he has to promise not to open until exactly 2pm, he is then asked to depart the premises.

Henry Adams subsequently enters a restaurant, but due to his somewhat dishevelled appearance, he is shown to a table at the back of establishment. He ordered two helpings of a handsome repast, whereupon the proprietor expects him to pay for his meal.

Mr Adams has been carefully scrutinising the clock, for after all he cannot open the envelope before he allotted time.

But when he finally does do so the contents, of the letter leaves Mr Adams completely perplexed. This is nothing to the looks of incredulity, on the faces of the restaurant management.

I had absolutely no idea that the film's premise comes from the pen of, non other than the celebrated American author Marl Twain.

I confess to not having actually read any of his literature, but I am certainly interested to make a start with this splendid tale.

I don't know it could be considered as a morality story, but it certainly involves morals or more appropriately, matters involving moral judgment.

For Henry Adams is immediately judged upon his personal appearance, and found instantly wanting, no one is even prepared to give him the time to day.

Until that is he brandishes his letter once its are perused, this attitude changes immediately.

But given his scruffy appearance it has to be properly ascertained, whether the document is genuine. But if so how could this character possibly acquire it?

Once people are suitably satisfied that it is indeed the genuine article, all former barriers dissolve instantly being replaced by instant civility.

The hoary old cliche has it that money makes the world go round, indeed the lack of it certainly hinders the lives of those of us, who were not born with a silver spoon in our mouths.

  • Douglas you're a dipstick

I wasn't going to bother with other than, a single Review of this entire miniseries, but I am now feeling so annoyed at Douglas, that I simply have to express it.

Honestly one of the key reasons, for my annoyance at Douglas, is because we share some of the similar traits, I would shout at him for things, I may well do myself.

Again in shows like this the main bloke, here the dad is shown as the prat, while the more levelheaded partner is the mum, also frankly I really don't know why, the son is so reasonable with his idiot dad.

Douglas really is his own worst enemy, and only has himself to blame, for the ways things turn out.

He is seemingly totally incapable, of seeing his own glaring faults, instead of trying to resolve matters with his son, his consideration is what will, other people think or say.

Douglas is mind numbingly stupid literally forcing, his spouse Connie to truncate her trip and return home, not satisfied with that he heaps the ignominy, on her of having to explain to all and sundry, what has happened.

While he decides to follow son Albie's footsteps, and bring him back home.

If instead he had brought Connie with him, they could both have had an enjoyable time in Venice, and son Albie may even have decided to come back, if only for his mum's sake.

  • A family man

Bergerac is a television series that for no particular reason, I never got around to watching it was originally broadcast.

Now I have just finally got around to rectifying my discrepancy, I will wait until I have seen the first series at least before I endeavour, to write a general review of the show as a whole, but I can't wait to get the ball rolling with this first ever episode.

It's an excellent commencement to the Jim Bergerac legend, with a lot being unpacked of his own particular personal baggage.

I can get a good impression of how the marriage might have floundered, Charlie Hungerford is certainly a larger than life individual.

Although I haven't seen enough of his daughter Deborah, to get any notion of how much, of a chip off his block she might be.

As ever the child of any family invariably suffers, disproportionately from any estrangement, and one can certainly see how, their daughter Kim will undoubtedly suffer, from any close proximity to her particular grandad.

Jim Bergerac certainly has other baggage to carry than that of his family, and his personal problems also impact his working life.

With many people in his line of work, they can almost invariably become embroiled, in an almost bigamous relationship, trapped between the job and the spouse.

Jim Bergerac is shown as a Detective Sergeant of the Jersey police force, but we can only guess at the exact position that he occupied, before we actually see him in the show. We only get an initial glimpse, into the police force for which he is employed, and barely a hint of the differences between, the police forces of England and Jersey.

Then there is the millionaire business tycoon Charlie Hungerford, the almost atypically schizophrenic, pillar of the community and Arthur Dailey about town.

It promises to be an intriguing element, of the Bergerac television series. To discover more of the obviously troublesome, relationship between these two protagonists. Of law and order and how can I best, describe it of the alternate business practices?
