No shade to the marvelous Mary Shelley. As we know, when her original book was published, it was groundbreaking. Now, 207 years later, it is an old story I know all too well.
This adaptation brings nothing new, though the cast and visuals are exceptional (standing O to costume design).
So here we have yet another film focused in large part on a hateful, unfeeling, selfish man. Victor is childish and, frankly, annoying. He only gets more tiresome as the film progresses through its two hour and twenty-nine minute runtime.
(The milk thing is irritating, too. It's so "look at me"... I'm sure someone thought it was very clever but to us it was trying too hard/cringey.)
Now all of that said, I can fully recognize that 1- that this film may be a fun ride for younger folks, if there are any, who aren't quite as familiar with this story. (To those I say: follow up your viewing of this film with a lovely binge of Penny Dreadful, it's a dark delicious world to sink into... and yes, Shelley's monsters are there.)
And 2- given the current dearth of groundbreakingly good TV and film, this could be a fun way to pass some time. We had a little watch party with too much food and candy, very Gilmore Girls, and sipped wine out of skull goblets. (I planned a similarly spooky decor to add to the fun.) If you're set on watching this, I recommend doing the same. You'll want to talk and laugh through this one.

It is definitely in the "cheesy Hallmark movie" lane (nothing wrong with that when one's in the mood) but there's a little more magic and charm than you'd expect. Some laugh-out-loud moments, and if you speak a little Italian you'll be delighted that for once a streaming film has authentic local accents. The English-language clichés used by the Italian characters are a little off and the dialogue for the American Dad is slightly stilted, but overall we had fun watching it. Scott Foley is cute as ever and his daughter's comment about how the world is working out for her generation rings true. Great voice, natural acting, strong presence from Maia Reficco. Also enjoyed Simone Luglio's likeability and character. Violante Placido is perfect as the smart mayor and fun romantic interest.
