It is definitely in the "cheesy Hallmark movie" lane (nothing wrong with that when one's in the mood) but there's a little more magic and charm than you'd expect. Some laugh-out-loud moments, and if you speak a little Italian you'll be delighted that for once a streaming film has authentic local accents. The English-language clichés used by the Italian characters are a little off and the dialogue for the American Dad is slightly stilted, but overall we had fun watching it. Scott Foley is cute as ever and his daughter's comment about how the world is working out for her generation rings true. Great voice, natural acting, strong presence from Maia Reficco. Also enjoyed Simone Luglio's likeability and character. Violante Placido is perfect as the smart mayor and fun romantic interest.
I don't know how they managed to take beaten-to-death subjects like these and make a breathtaking show, but that's what this is, absolutely breathtaking... at first. Subjects that have been overdone, that I thought were too sad to revisit, have somehow been treated in a new and revealing and beautiful and poignant way. The casting, cinematography, music... everything is on point, and that is a feat indeed. I was mesmerized by the main actresses and thrilled to be watching (finally! They are few and far between!) a show that could really keep me guessing. It's psychological but not in a boring art house kind of way. It's smart, moody, and stunning. And there are touches of humor, too. Halfway through it gets derivative (shame... not the actors' fault) but very strong otherwise.
Cute!
A bit spoofy and definitely more for kids, this is better than similar for-kids made-for-Netflix superhero films I've seen.
Seems some reviewers are upset bc this doesn't do their favorite video game justice. I get that. For those like me, however, who aren't familiar with the game, this is an entertaining and benign film... with some funny moments, some beauty, and beloved characters/actors.
Sure, as some others have said, we don't really get to see the relationships develop, but that doesn't mean we have to disbelieve them. As in a good video game you accept the information you're given and press on.
Could it have been even better? A thousand percent. But it's better than a lot of the other guff being served up on streaming nowadays.
