Great performances but I haven't seen a movie with such a telegraphed plot, with so much unnecessary exposition, in a long time.
Does this review have spoilers? No. But the movie is entirely selfspoiling, so it wouldn't matter anyway.
Really the cast behind the minor characters somewhat rescued this movie from being totally unwatchable. Guy who played jay was excellent. The villain was quite menacing.
Hamm was rather charming, and played it nice and subtle. Tina fey and nick mohammed weren't given much to work with.
Could have really done without being so blatant to the point of having contempt for the audience. Written by someone who maybe appreciates dark comedy but just can't muster it up themselves?

The books changed my life early on, pullman's unashamed fantasy whispered to me the possibilities of philosophies and realities far more palatable and sensible than the ones I had i happened to have inherited.
I did not loathe the earlier attempt at turning the franchise into a movie, though it did become something of a laughing stock in the eyes of many, so i worry that nostalgia perhaps could once again be biasing my rating of this latest longer form retelling. I have rated it at a 9, but perhaps it is closer to an 8 or possibly 7 in parts.
The kids did not blow me away performance wise but they did a solid job and there is promise there. Mcavoy was fantastic as he always is. But Ruth Wilson just outshines all else, i am left in awe of her abilities.

Seems the last season was purely a contractual stipulation? Not completely devoid of good moments or the odd laugh, but they were few and far between.
Other reviews seem too nostalgic about the early seasons to admit there was no real character or thematic progression, just a rehash the first two seasons. The finale especially was a rush job to tie up loose ends.
Still, the first two seasons, like derek, had a lot of heart and the shows overall success can't be dismissed.
