I was expecting a really passable b-movie to half-watch while doing chores. The truth is, this is a perfectly decent, properly atmospheric, well-acted and well-written enough southern gothic horror-romance.
Of course it's an older movie, don't expect fancy special effects. It's obviously lower budget, though to be honest, you don't notice it all that much. They did well with what they had, and the ending is good.
I feel i could recommend this; it'd even be remake worthy.

Lots of elements cheaply taken from Star Wars or other fantasy epics - they clearly tried to rip off other things just to make a big movie. The plot isn't particularly well done, but it's not bad either, and there are no holes - and there are a few very cool scenes in between.
Nothing here will really impress, it's not a thrill ride, but it's very watchable if you want a fantasy film.
I think the only thing that really bothers me in the end is that many side characters were actually... quite useless. There is this plot element of the protagonist finding friends, building up an army, etc. But by the end, all except... two I think, were actually useless during 90% of the story. And that also means really useless deaths where you can't really feel that much, because the characters didn't really do much. This could be a good example for anyone interested in writing or plot analysis, as to how purposeless characters don't equal much by the end.

I was really excited about watching this movie after having seen trailers for it. What beautiful images, I thought! What a wonderful way to honour an artist, as to paint a whole film in his style! Wow!
Now I know, though, why this movie didn't get as much attention as I thought it would. What a boring film! Not the art - the visuals are beautiful! Such specific and unique animation! But the script... what trash! It's the most uninspired, dull, and formulaic script I can imagine. They tried to introduce some sort of a thriller, murder-mystery pseudo sub-plot, probably because they had nothing else to go on. Just... the movie was beautiful, but I was so bored! The storyline was so uninspired it even pissed me off. Too bad - the artists put in so much effort, you would have thought the writers could have done the same.
