This is not a list of films that deal with grief or scenaria about dying people; this is rather a list of films that take a look at the prospect of death from a Heideggerian point of view, if I may say so playfully, not because they are exercises in philosophy but because they consider the mindness of death as vital element of human beings;and try to come in terms with it. No wonder, they are all masterpieces, in my opinion, of their-or any-kind. Here's the list:

this is my promised sequel to my Best films of 2015;I consider these movies deserving to be mentioned, and to some extent they may prove , in the passage of time, to be as good as the ones in the A list, or even better. Time will show...

we are expecting Joy and maybe a few more films that may prove to be nice surprises till the end of the year(the Revenant is not expected before January), but I suppose the time for the list has come.I intend to accompany it with two more, one for the rest of the best, since I believe there were many movies this year that are worth mentioning, and one with the ones that might fit in but were left out(together with the reasons why).So be it!

When I was a kid, my favourite movies were horror movies;I was lucky: as I was born in the sixties, I had the pleasure of witnessing the most exciting period of the genre of all time.I am referring to the end of the sixties, seventies and beginning of eighties, when many great directors considered the horror genre-which they had loved-the perfect place to create their personal masterpieces.I understand that many people may think otherwise;some are in love with the american horror of the thirties, some of the fifties, and some have every reason to love the Hammer period-especially english and italian films- and I suppose there are many who prefer the horror movies that are made these days, which I'm afaid I find-most of them-dreadful and have started to avoid them(I think it all started with films like The ring and the terrible Blair witch project).Nevertheless, this is my list of the films I consider the best horror movies ever;most of them make it in my list of best movies ever, whatever the genre.

Movies better than the books they were based on

I keep returning with listing, maybe trying to find the best way to express something dear to me I feel is missing;it's about movies, since movies are the closest to what I consider an identity of mine(there are , of course, song writers such as Peter Hammill and Ray Davies, and writers such as Franz Kafka, I identify with, but it's movies that tell the biggest part of the story).The question is why would anyone bother to know about;well, I hope there is some point, apart from my narcissistic satisfaction, and I figure that judging from my point of view, according to which the most important remarks stem from close relationships(to the subjects), whereas no critical view has any meaning unless it reflects a personal attachment(isn't there one always?) So here is the story:

It's a little early, I know, but this is my first draft, quite strong I admit, of a year that pleasantly surprised me, as it turned out, unexpectedly, to be one of the best of the last years.The list is in alphabetical order and includes all the movies I found rewarding , one way or another, this year.So far...

I used to condemn greek cinema as incompetent;in the long run I realize there are many greek films I have loved;here is my personal choice, in random order.I have to add off the record Nikos Vergitsis' Revans, as I didn't manage to bring it up through imdb.No Aggelopoulos included and none of the recent successes of greek cinema that left me indifferent.Of course there are others movies to appreciate, some older, some great ones that were not among my personal favorites.And some I may forget.But this list is a kind of a start!

The way a film ends is, in my opinion, the thing that counts most in the general impression it leaves upon the spectator;it defines, also, the ethics of the maker-or the makers, if you wish, but I tend to consider the director responsible for the final result, whether that holds true or not for every case-and by ethics I mean the whole point of making the movie, being it a comedy, an action film, a drama, a sci-fi, a horror film, or an art one, it really doesn't matter, as every action bears some consequenses(here the act of film making, I suggest). One can argue regarding what counts as a more satisfying ending(and you can see in the following list that I strongly disagree with the general insructions of script-writing handbooks about clear and happy endings) but everyone leaves the theater with a last impression that stays. Here are my favourite endings, as far as I can remember;and that means that in everyone of them I felt ecstatic;in fact, I always have a special feeling when I finally like a film and find it meaningful to me, so this is only a small sample:(to be coninued)

There are great moments in film history that wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for the songs that were used to punctuate them;in these cases the song seems to function as inspiration and as a basic element to the meaning of the scene.Here is a selection of some of the greatest such moments.

This is not a list of my best ever, but a list of the most infuential ones upon me during my lifetime;of course, movies I've watched as a child and, mainly, as an adolescent are the ones that are registered more strongly;some of them have survived well through the years, some stand just as good memories.But in the long run I had loved them all!

This is the today revised edition of my best films ever,which must,as always, be taken very seriously, since I do not intend accept to lightheated objections(like where is Citizen Cane etc?).The evergoing changes are due to rewatching past films that accordingly loose or regain their glory.The best ones look better today.
