First thing's first. It lacks the same charisma and chemistry the Losers had and the dread pennywise instilled in the first part. Even with a long runtime the the adult cast gets less screen time and even more so together. This leaves the children cast to do the heavy lifting around their frienship in flashbacks and a constant reminder to the mastery of the first movie. Having already scared us the first time, pennywise gets less screen and even fewer scares. Yes this dampens the very essence of the story; the Losers and Pennywise. Yet the story arc is the best among a lot of horror movies. The characters are neatly tied together where each loser gets their moment and their sunshine(atleast for the survivors) still seems earned. So kudos to the author himself. May be a parallel storyline as per the book made the book equally impactful. It is still remains one of the few horror movies to cherish.
Shadow and Bone is in no way GOT. It's half as good as The Witcher. So the bar for this is pretty low. The main reason for this has to be with the cast which can be either boring or borderline annoying. There is zero chemistry between each other and this further exacerbates the plot which is sloppy with expositions which are just meh! It's hard to care at all about this series. Frankly they made as much of an impression as the Dorne storyline in GOT. I haven't read the books and if that is the reason this feels such a discounted watch the creators have done a disservice to the series. Kudos to the production design and cinematography here else every thing falls apart in this middling story.
The first expression that comes after watching dirty picture is 'wow'. Man did they pull it off -they actually outdid to anyone's expectation. The film's done with the heart in its right place and in a great mind. There were big doubts when the first trailers promos arrived. The name of the film itself drew a lot of negative retaliation in the mind. But whatever the story offers you is by far the best you get in the whole year.
From the beginning itself the story is gripping. The narrative so great it doesn't pass you by in the proceedings but it immerses you in the depth of the character 'Silk'. In all logic and dignity we get to know Reshma not some B grade voluptuous bombshell Madrassi actress. Hats off to Vidya Balan , not that there was any doubt that she would do any injustice to the character but she has definitely shown that nobody is like her in the industry. From the guts of accepting so demanding role to gain oodles of weight for the sake of it is definitely gratifying. If not her in the scene there is always Nasiruddin Shah, Tushar Kapoor and Imraan Hashmi who surely don't let the tide ebb. All three make there screen presence evitable especially Imraan Hashmi as 'Ibram' is quite an endearing character.Still am missing the great roles from 'Nyla',Silk's mother and Surya's wife all are memorable and defining for Silk as well.
The most astounding part of the film still is tits script. Though loosely based on real character biography could never have been this colourful on screen. As lots of us have felt biopics to be dim and gloomy this is not the same fare. Moments of disparity prevail in the movie but the pacing and the dialogues just fill in your appetite. Some dirty dual talking in the first half to the great shayeris in the second half this is filled with memorable dialogues.
Great lines great acting what more can now a days we ask or but still this got more than that. Definitely Silk fires the screen each time she enters but we are talking about the technical details the film has stood by. Absolutely astounding sound design of the 80's and aptly built production design and set pieces. The film shines in every category. Surely the film comes with warning but it is still a must watch.
