  • A story tormented between art and commercial cinema!!

Writer director Chattopadhyay made an earlier attempt writing a subtle story in 'Dus Kahaniya - Rice plate'. This time he made a bold attempt in touching the darker side of glamorous cinema.

Story goes something like this, a young boy, Jerry (Johnny Bakshi) forced by his mother (Lillete Dubey) to dresses and act in movie as a girl child, Baby Kusum. Jerry grows up to become confused, schizophrenic, drug addict, etc. This movie is an attempt to depict agony of this boy through possibly a true story of baby Kusum.

Solid plot, strong characters and above average acting from leads are plus points. On the other side, over-abstract scenes, unnecessary use of bad language and glamor could have been surely avoided. At times, dialogs sounds are so vulgar instead of feeling pity for the boy, felt like laughing at the writer for adding abusive slangs in the movie just for hack of it. Lillete Dubey is the most convincing character here, she played the bad mother to perfection. Bipasa Basu played Jerry's hallucination and she is definitely not cut out for this kind of roles.

  • a sad sad Raavan from a bad bad movie

Mr. MR after 'Dil se' you never took SRK in your movies saying he spoiled the movie with his overacting. Now, what will you say about Abhishek Bacchan, who hammed his way to the glory in Raavan. Aishwarya Rai does nothing much than screaming and looking good. Special mention for her dresses for staying speckles in muddy background. And Maryada Purushottam Ram from the epic was depicted nothing more than a goon hunting shrewd cop. You gave us man-boobed, beer-bellied Govinda for Hanuman for jumping trees. Come on show some respect to your audience.

Overall dialogs and delivery is so bad, I felt all dialogs were in Tamil, they just dubbed it in Hindi. Surely Madras Talking paid handsome amount to critics for writing good reviews.

Only saving grace of the movie is Santosh Sivan's cinematography (which is more like Theeviravaathi, The Terrorist and Before the Rains) and Rehman's music. Though this is no where their best.

Take away - waste of time, waste of money

  • Things happen when trying to re-invent classics

Jha took 5 long years to make this movie. I am sure, during that time, he must have watched both Mahabharata and Godfather many many times. And it is apparent from this movie. Let me give a categorical review of few aspects

Storyline - This Raajneeti pizza had Mahabharata for base, Godfather for toppings and UP, MP's political scenarios for condiments. Good job, not the best though.

Cast - When you take intense actors like Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai; they push your cart, you don't have to do much and they justified well-shed money on them. Katrina and Arjun Rampal were refreshing, but Ranbeer took the cake with best role of Samar Pratap (Arjun from Mahabharata and Michael from Godfather).

Script - Rating first and second half separately, 8 for fast paced story development till interval. All the best dialogs and scenes are in first half only. 3 for boring and predictable second half. Almost all of the scenes post-interval are dragged.

Script - Delivered both best and worst in the same movie. Thumb up for Nana Patekar's party candidate nomination scene in slum. Even after ignoring many technical flaws in many parts; a total boo for Kunti-Karan meeting scene from Mahabharata, where Jha completely forgot to re-write it and just copy pasted whole scene including dialogs.

Editing - This could have been a nice power packed 2 hour movie, no idea why dragged to 3 hours.

Take away - In case you decide to leave in interval, you won't miss a thing!
