Hi. I have seen many acclaimed actors say that this was the film/performance they were most proud of in their careers. I also follow French cinema, speak French, and I am a SAG actor.
I feel this was Directed in English, by a traditionally French Director. All the dialogue seems like it was a direct translation to English. Meaning that, it's how French would go in English, but we don't talk like this. Using words that we don't really use in English. I also feel the characters' are more how French people would act more so than American/British people. Ex: Being nonchalant abt wanting to see their wives have an affair, talking abt that in front of others, etc.
I feel Elaine Stritch gave a really outstanding performance, and I don't know why she was not in more film roles after this. The main actor did a good job, but he was gay and not believable as a heterosexual leading man, having these open relationships with females. John Gielgud claimed he was most proud of his role. The first half of the movie, he was talking abt bodily functions and using the bathroom a lot.
In conclusion, I feel this would have been different if all the actors did this in French, or if they hired French actors to speak English. This is a boring film, and I do not recommend it, and I do not plan to rewatch it. Ellen Burstyn is a great actress, but Idk why she did this unfeatured role. Nice setting, nice landscapes, good actors. I see where certain aspects were critically acclaimed, but this is not a box office movie.

I am obligated to practice French as part of language acquisition. (So I had a reason to watch this film). I feel it was a really good and interesting film. It is a story that is different than what we would see in the United States. It is very French.
It was interesting to observe the main character's life on a trout farm. For fun, the family goes out bowling with other another family. They also go to many early 80s French and Japanese discotheques. It was really interesting.
I think I need to watch the film again because there were certain sequences that were hard for me to follow. The ending was really good, I thought. I also felt the performances by Jeanne Moreau and Jean-Pierre Cassel, could have been Oscar-nominated.
In conclusion, with French films, they cast actors who Act the roles really well, even if they have smaller shoulders or no butt. Whereas American films cast gorgeous people, who may not be as advanced as actors. I feel this film is worth watching, and different from American films.

Hi. Rewatching this movie for the first time as an adult. Yes, top notch cinematography, Acting, soundtrack. Other than that this movie is too slow by today's standards. Also, I did not relate to the white imperialist people. They don't wk and tell everybody what to do. Most importantly (I see as an adult), their relationship promoted open relationships and cheating. Karen gets married to her husband, and then she lives away from him for half the movie. If u were born after the invention of the iPhone, this movie might be too slow for you. Too slow and not relatable by today's standards. Even tho well acted, well produced, and great shots.
