Now it's time to boo the clown because it's not entertaining anymore (ln the way we want).
Just with the dynamic of Arthur being cheered for being Joker in the first movie and when not being Joker, he is seen a waste; is self explaining of the reception this movie is getting.
Arthur is a waste. You don't care any at all about him. You never cared. Its was fun and satisfying when he was causing acts of mad violence that satisfies the destructive urges that are in people, public, masses (however we can call it). It's safer to satisfy that urge on other people who went that far, as in Joker, is my safer because you don't have to face consequences for your destructive behaviour. Cheer them went they satisfy and boo them when they not.
The movie is directly exploring the "Joker phenomenon" and forces audience to self reflect, which is something obviously most people failed at.
The movie makes us experience Arthur's asylum days.
Reality and fantasy cuts deep both ways, Lee being a pivot point and catalyst for Arthur. There are variant factors and moments that pushes Arthur back and forth around his sanity.
I don't find musical pieces over done or unnecessary, since for Arthur while growing up old school entertainment programs on TV while he was growing up was his escape in that abusive household, and his mother pushed him more into delusional behaviours since his childhood, even to his adult life.
The movie has an emotional flow that is led by key moments and requires attentive watching.
I understand the disappointment people had with not seeing spectacle of "The Joker". After all this is an adaptation. The original source material is out there in the comic format, for for those who wants to enjoy the Joker character for whatever reasons.
Insisting on not understanding this and the first movie was trying and pushing it into an expectation of spectacle is unfair and blindly done.
The hate this movie received just draws paralel to Arthur's experience. You just don't care about him, you cared about seeing The Joker and when it wasnt given in the way you wanted, Arthur was a waste. Now it's popular to bash him and this movie.
I appreciate the honesty of this movie for these reasons and from production to actors and direction, it is a well made movie.
