From the start of this film, you know you're in good hands. Greg Grunberg is his usual affable self, and provides the solid centre of the film. This is a film that does not take itself too seriously. It moves along at quite a pace with minimal exposition - though even a minor amount has the two main characters yawning. The special effects are pretty good and there is one kill which is seriously creepy.
So why haven't I scored it higher? Because it pretty much fails to land every joke. When Clare Kramer first appears, everyone in her squad is in combat boots except her, who is in high heels. Is this a witty commentary on the role of the leading lady in action films, or is it just being sexist? I honestly don't know. This happens several times with Lombardo Boyer playing a sidekick which is a borderline racial stereotype. Again, there are hints this is meant to be a pastiche, but the joke doesn't land.
It's a shame, because if what you come for is a tongue in cheek horror film about a giant spider, the film delivers. From its first creepy entrance to the final Kaiju size arachnid, it's a very enjoyable film.

This film has so much potential and sadly doesn't deliver. The concept is great - the main character is an obsessive fan of Anna Hathaway who is trying to get her to make a film with him. In order to demonstrate his commitment, he films three women in scenes from the film. In the film he is making, he is portraying himself. He sees the character as being more obsessed and psychotic than him, but actually it's just a reflection of his personality- as is evidenced by his bloody actions.
It's a great idea - and very meta. It looks at obsession with celebrity, the ability of people to hide behind the camera and their willingness to fool themselves. But, it is clear that the film is largely improvised, so it lacks impact and punch. Apparently the filmmaker decided to only used first takes - but there's a reason that not all films don't do that, in terms of making a film slicker and more effective.
The pacing drags and the characters are not engaging enough to maintain attention.
It's a shame, as it could have been exceptional.
