Stevenson had already gotten himself a new show, "Hello, Larry" (which bombed) so there was some bad blood with the producers.
I was 16 and was shocked seeing this episode live as it were.
Looking back, it really emphasizes the futility of war.
To this day, I can't watch it knowing what's coming.
Trapper bailed too, whining it was the Hawkeye show. Did a lot for his career.
The show was always comedy with a heavy dose of satire thrown in (which is really hard to pull off)
My Dad was a Korean war vet (aircraft mechanic) and loved this show.
And I think we have all known a "Ferret Face" and "Hot Lips", People you would rather avoid.

Great episode.
My dad was a flight engineer on 707's from Idlewild. He survived the Tenerife crash.
