  • The best Czech movie in 20 years

Yes, in my opinion, Pouta (Ties That Bind) is the best Czech movie of the last twenty years. This movie tells a story about a bad guy who gets attached to a stranger - pretty ginger girl who doesn't even know he exists. Antonín is a bad-ass, a member of secret police (the story is set to the 80's), and he's not a nice guy. He's secretive, reserved and emotionless - and on the edge of madness. And yet he has one passion, this plain ginger girl who is a lover of the man who Antonín monitors. Antonín's disturbed mind tells a lot about communist everyday reality but this is not really psychological movie. It's more like film noir, or dark thriller where you can watch mental decline of one bad-ass who deserves it. Still, the movie is very catchy, witty and satisfying. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

  • The Pink Panther meets Kick-Ass

The Green Hornet begins with a humorous scene with the local mafia guy (excellent James Franco) and the "big fish" - the main bad guy Chudnovsky (charismatic Christoph "Colonel Landa" Waltz). From this moment you know what to expect. The Green Hornet is full of amusing quotes and hyperbole. Cameron Diaz has to endure jokes at her age (finally!), the boys certainly appreciate nicely equipped car of the main hero Britt (Seth Green) and cool fight scenes. Yes, it's fun and you will like it. But in this movie I miss a little deeper meaning. At any moment you know that it's all just a game. I appreciate, however, showing the power of the media that can make a hero out of anybody.

  • Poetic, cute and heart-warming

Kooky's Return (Kuky se vrací) is a story about children's imagination - we don't know if everything happens only in Ondra's fantasy or if it's for real. Jan Svěrák won't tell you which one of these two options is right. YOU - the viewer - have to decide. Most of the characters are moving puppets and they are... well, they are quite ugly but very charming. They are little forest gods or tiny monsters made of garbage (ecology is one of the topics in this movie but don't worry, it won't bother you). And Kooky. Kooky is a cult toy in the Czech Republic right know because he's old-fashioned, pink and plain but sooo cute at the same time. I didn't mention the story so far because it's not the most important thing in Kooky's return. It's adequate: story of a lost toy that wants to come back to its owner and experience some adventures in the forest with picturesque characters. It's the good old manual work with puppets and imagination the the scriptwriter and director Jan Svěrák.
