Beautifully shot ghost story full of spooky moon lit scenes of northeast Connecticut. Recognizing scenes of the wonderful campus of Eastern Connecticut State University is a special treat for Willimantic area fans. Inspired by a real story of cremation remains of patients found at an abandoned asylum for the "mentally insane" this fantasy often gets too close to reality for comfort. A.D. Calvo has a knack for contrasting beauty and horror, both through images and sounds. This is not a movie to watch alone. In the end, the boundaries of mental health and sanity blur as fantasy and reality trade places. As always, questions are answered as new questions remain.
The Melancholy Fantastic is a pleasure to watch. The cinematography is beautiful and holds your interest, even during the few moments when the pace of the movie slows down. The plot is not obvious and requires full attention to understand its subtleties, but the suspense and images are enough to carry you through it, even if you are not in the mood to "think" it. The music is great. The film features great images of New England in winter. I've seen many higher-budget Christmas movies that I didn't enjoy nearly as much. It is a great movie to watch by the fire with friends when all your Christmas shopping is finally done. Don't forget the popcorn. Enjoy!
Beautiful Connecticut summer scenery is the background for this suspenseful story with a surprise ending. A creative plot line and lush cinematography make this movie a pleasure to watch. The entertaining film is easy to follow but enigmatic till the end. This movie stays with you long after is over, forcing you to reexamine your memories of each scene. I look forward to more productions from this talented new director. He appears to have a keen sense of mystery and aesthetics. The movie was reminiscent of The Hours and The Sixth Sense but with a fresh ambiance. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good fantasy thriller. Enjoy!
