I tried giving Kim Kardashian a chance, but her brand has vomited all over this show and made it a trashy, surface level mess parading as a feminist thriller. If this is feminism, if that is what woman would create... they've set the movement of equality back decades. Stupidest lines, least likable characters... and my god do they think woman only think about beauty and babies? This show can't stop talking about babies... it's empty otherwise. Every other season had multiple layers of things going on. Season two had the devil, aliens, evil nuns, two serial killers and it also managed to have subtext about women's choices and gay rights. This season is the most childish portrayal of femininity, while making every man evil, terrible or weak. You don't have to tear down one gender to lift another up. My mouth was dropped open at some of the dialogue that these writers should be ashamed to have penned. "You pooping... well cut it off girl". "This is how you were made!" Cringe. Awful. I'm absolutely astounded this show has sunk to a new low. If you can handle it, Ryan Murphy, end the show with some dignity. If you want it to keep going fire all responsible for this abysmal season.
If a goat suddenly appearing in the shower and a Barbie doll being placed in different places to make a woman go mad scares you... you're in for a treat. If you're the other 99% of the population, or have ever seen a horror movie ever and used to the tropes, you'll be bored out of your ever loving mind. This isn't just bad season, a bad episode it's so student film crap that it's time to clean house with whatever writers are responsible for whatever this is. Heavy handed messaging, instead of subtle subtext on social issues, repetitive scares that are just the same thing dozens of times. Story enough for an episode or two, spread across 5 episodes. The very essence of following a pregnant woman who is seeing stuff for this long is an extreme misunderstanding of horror itself. In no way was this ever, in any stage of development, a good idea to make a season about.
For me, the pilot was too Golden Girls and not enough unique voice; but the show improves by episode 03 so much that it now feels like it has its own perspective and feels like home to go back to over and over again. I think the show would be improved by being a weekly show, rather than dumping all at once, since it feels so warm to return to, but it all being dumped at once did help me see the improvement for the first few episodes (so maybe 2 at a time?). It's also a show that should have regular 22 episode seasons, as that format works better for people getting hooked onto it. I was almost hooked, but then it ended.
Putting the mother at the center of the show starting with episode 3 really improved the comedy and made the men much funnier (similar to Sofia in Golden Girls). When that character suddenly stops appearing, it upsets the balance of the show and its comedy. However, it wasn't the shows fault as the actress died in real life. I think the show handled it as well as could be.
My biggest compliment is that this show is one of the few sit-coms to actually have situations created that make the comedy. The failed Fraiser sequel struggled with this, never having a funny situation at the center of its problems. This show has had fresh and fun concepts that make the comedy spring forth from it, like the conservative Senator who is a fun riot on weekends, only to go right back to being terrible at work. That was funny. They made her relatable even if not likable. That was great writing. The Mormon guy who isn't out to his soon to be wife, that was a heavy topic which never got too serious for a comedy yet dealt with some interesting moral dilemmas. By the end of the season I was invested and enjoyed the show. While I'm not yet hooked, I would return for a second season.
