Overworked after tristan left--student
James has arranged for a veterinary student to intern at the practice. After all, with Tristan in the army, they are down one vet. However, James isn't all that thrilled once the young man begins working with them, as suddenly the student and Siegfried are thick as thieves and James is working just as hard as ever.
Another problem James must contend with is with Mrs. Pomfrey. It seems the good-hearted lady as taken in a dog now that its owner is in the service. However, the dog is big, boisterous AND a fart-machine...and she wants help with the flatulence. And, the new student and James do not agree on his diagnosis.
In addition, Helen wants to start a family...which is tough with James working 27 hours a day! How could they possibly have a baby with a father who is never there in the first place?!
This is a very average episode...not a bad thing, as average with this show is a high standard indeed. Well worth seeing.

The veterinary practice has never been one for paperwork or organization. Because of this, Siegfried has hired Miss Harbottle...an accountant who likes organizing things. Obviously, such a person is not likely to fit in well with Siegfried and his 'system'...or lack of a system. One one hand, he hates what Harbottle is doing. But on the other, she's like medicine...it'll do you good but might be a bit nasty. And, Miss Harbottle is quite the fascist...I mean, 'efficiency expert'.
While the story idea is great, this is a somewhat painful episode to watch...mostly because everyone hates Harbottle but do nothing about her because they're afraid of her. This is a VERY simple and limited story idea...good but certainly one that should last, at most, the length of one episode...and fortunately she was only in this episode. Overall, a decent episode but no more...especially since there really isn't any secondary or tertiary plot.

Even an okay episode of "All Creatures Great and Small" is a very good one...and "Broodiness" is one of these okay episodes.
There are three plots in this one. First, Siegfried is in a terrible mood and has been since Tristan was sent off to war. It's obvious he's worried...but he's taking his fears out on everyone around him and it makes him even more insufferable than usual. Second, Mrs. Hall has FINALLY decided to do something about her marriage. Her husband abandoned her long ago and she's finally decided to file for a divorce. And, third, and certainly not least, James is dealing with a young punk who has a sick dog. However, because the kid trusts no one, he responds to James by socking him in the beezer (punching him in the nose...though socking him in the beezer sounds better). Is there any getting through to this young hoodlum? And, is there any good in the kid underneath it all?
This is enjoyable though none of the plots are ones which engage the viewer as well as many other plots in other shows. Still, it is enjoyable and worth seeing.
