  • Really fun, really dumb ending

This movie is sooooo much fun until the final 5 minutes. The writer never answers any of the open questions and then abruptly ends the movie like his laptop lost power before he could write the ending.

And it's such a shame because Stephen was onto something here. All the ingredients of an awesome horror story are there. He had a really good concept, but then had no idea how it was all going to play out.

The plot holes are hard to look past, which is made all the more frustrating because it could've been fixed so easily.

Don't even get me started on the big reveal at the end. It was a cool twist, but what was the point? There was no payoff because the credits literally roll less than 2 minutes later, so it had absolutely no impact on the overall story.

Despite the writer failing to answer even the most basic questions, the movie isn't a total wash. What's here is done well (minus the ending), and there are some genuinely good scares. Not jump scares, but real heebie jeebie inducing tension, which are so much more effective.

Without the absolute garbage ending, I'd have given this a 7. I'd still recommend it, but be prepared to walk away ultimately disappointed.

  • Implausibly Dumb

This movie wasn't "intentionally frustrating," it was poorly written nonsense. It expects you to believe that there are no limits to a mother's love for her child and then proceeds to introduce you to the worst daughter possible who has absolutely no redeeming qualities. She's not even remotely likable or deserving of empathy. In fact, this movie actually had me rooting for the psychotic drug dealer at one point.

Even if you can get past all of that, and you still care about the mother/daughter relationship, there are more holes in the plot than a moth-eaten sweater. Deep, implausible holes that will only fuel your rage as you yell at the characters on your screen. And the cherry on top is that there is ZERO redemption arc for the daughter and yet somehow we're still supposed to care whether or not they find their way back to each other? Yeah, no thanks.

Excellent performances by Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson, but strongly recommend avoiding this complete drivel.
