  • Too Much is not enough

I think "Hacks" is over-rated and it is only Jean Smart that makes it bearable. I found the Kayla character almost as annoying as Ava.

And now we have Jessica Salmon, who comes across as one of those characters in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" that Larry and Geoff would be appalled by and plotting against.

I watched "Girls" because it was sort of edgy, it was honest and I thought Lena Dunham was sort of courageous. One episode that I did like - and the only one I really remember and watched a second time - was the one where they went to meet Jessa's father and his hippy stepmother in upstate New York. Rosanna Arquette and Ben Mendelsohn added the zest and life that was so lacking in so many of the other episodes. Refreshing.

Fine actors can do that. Last night I grudgingly watched the third episode of "Too Much" and the sense of relief when Richard E. Grant made an appearance was real. Real, but brief.

"Too Much" is just extremely disappointing.

  • A genuine homage to the '78 flick

Yes, it's all familiar, been done before, maybe better . . . But there are some nice touches here. Another reviewer has pointed out the various nods to the earlier movie, notably the Brian May score and the character names.

This remake or homage or update or whatever it is does tend to drag here and there, and some of the scenes are pretty gross. Well, the frog eating one is, anyway.

Finally, one thing nobody else has mentioned is the brief but brave contribution of Simone Buchanan as Patrick's ill-fated mother. She has described spending a day naked in a tub of bathwater, wearing a wet merkin at the age of 45. For that I thank her.

  • Long, boring and dishonest.

Funny? Nope - OK, one amusing exchange - the bit about helping the girls dress and undress, and forty francs a week being all Woody can afford. Sexy? Nope - a bit of cleavage here and there, bugger all else.

Apparently Woody Allen was very unhappy with this film, and no wonder. It's like somebody decided to make a risqué sex farce then leave any really sexy bits on the cutting room floor. When I first saw the very brief Crazy Horse scenes I thought that they must have been censored.

Find a copy of the August 1965 Playboy and check out the article "What's Nude, Pussycat?" and the Paula Prentiss stripper scenes which are not, repeat not, in the movie. They might have made it at least interesting. It's a very dishonest attempt to lure viewers to this dreary, mindless mess.
