I love the Tony and Anne Hillerman books and was looking forward to this series. However, there were too may changes to the characters and their relationships. The show also lacks the "feel" of the Navajo reservation and people. That area is just beautiful and they didn't use that awesome landscape enough. As noted by the "Navajo Times," they did a poor job of representing the Navajo language and the actors needed a lot more coaching. Native Navajo speakers found their language to be butchered and unrecognizable. This is the producers fault, not the actors. I also don't understand the need to change relationship and some ot the personality of the characters. This Chee is the series is far to "soft" compared the Chee in the books and lacks his spiritual aspect. Bernadette Manuelito was not in the early books. And while understand the desire to add the character earlier in the stories, it really messes with the relationship between her and Chee. Also, she was very family oriented and her mother and sister were a big part of her life that is not included.
You need to be a kid when you see this movie. It doesn't translate as well if you see it as an adult. As an adult you find yourself thinking about the boys parents (who are never mentioned) and what the must be going through. I saw this in the theater when I was about the same age as the boy in the movie and it effected me deeply. The desire to live off the land in the wilderness is a dream I have always carried with me after that. The grit and determination of the boy to make it on his own is inspiring. His adventures are true to life reality, not the fantastical or magical that most kid films are. I love this movie and the book. Be sure to read the book.
I was so disappointed when "Lockwood & Co." got cancelled. It was such a great show. Then "Dead Boy Detectives" came out and I thought, YAY, a possible show to replace it. Yes, it was every bit as good! It had humor, mystery, supernatural fantasy, love, horror, action, great characters, everything you could want! And just like "Lockwood & Co." they cut it off after only one season. GRRRR! There was so much more story to tell!!! The characters had lots of backstory that was just waiting to come out!!! I am so sick of good shows like this getting cut while the make yet another spin-off of "The Walking Dead!" This show is SO MUCH BETTER! It deserves another season or 3!!!
