  • Stupid, Nonsensical, and Undeniably Entertaining

The world is in want of a lot of things. Another review of A Minecraft Movie is probably not one of them. But in the purely selfish interest of glomming on to the Very Important Pop Culture Film of our year 2025, I'm gonna do it.

A Minecraft Movie is a mess. A glorious splatter of a film encompassing 15 years of blocky graphics, devolving memery, and generational brain rot. I cringed, I groaned, and I laughed out loud more than I expected to. Needless to say my third grader loooved it.

The movie clearly belongs to Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and your enjoyment will hinge mainly upon your tolerance of their schtick. It worked for me; most of the jokes that landed involved the two of them as dueling idiots. I don't need to tell you that the rest of the cast are basically NPCs added to push the threadbare plot along; everyone already knows that. The Jennifer Coolidge/villager subplot is pretty funny but feels entirely tacked on, which is less of a complaint than merely an observation.

When I saw the first preview of A Minecraft Movie I thought it was going to be a disaster. I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be merely a beautiful mess, one that kept me entertained all the way through. Junk food for the soul.

This film has atmosphere, I'll give it that. The previews had me excited to check it out; Willem DaFoe hunting ape monsters in a viking outfit? Sign me up! The production design is top notch, the strange lost in time setting of Carpathia is beautiful and haunting, and the creature design and execution is very well done.

The story, on the other hand, seems to be an afterthought. The dialogue is indistinct (figuratively and literally; oftentimes I had no idea what they were saying), and the characters really lacked any nuance or development. Quirky for the sake of quirkiness.

My main gripe, though, is that it mostly fails as a kids' movie. I normally love slow, atmospheric films, but this one moved like the tectonic plates that formed the mountains of Catpathia. I brought my 9-year old and he didn't hesitate to tell me how boring he found the film, and we left before it ended. There was very little humor, and most of the parts that seemed to be attempts at laughs fell completely flat.

I really wanted to like this film. I admire the dedication to practical effects, and the attention to feeling and atmosphere in the world building. Unfortunately, the lack of a compelling story or characters made this into a slog.
