Although I first watched this with my father at a younger age, I recently rewatched it and it is just as entertaining and terrifying as it was a decade ago. Something that I highly enjoy about older movies that don't necessarily rely on CGI and other special effects only recently developed is that what distinguishes the quality of the work is heavily dependent on the writing.
Dialogue well written and gripping, with excellent acting on all parts. You're kept on the edge of your seat, and left feeling pure terror. There's no reliance on sexualization, jump scares, overtly grotesque or disturbing acts; rather it is unsettling as it claims to alter reality itself; a pure type of doom that you feel from deep within and that has no sense of relief; a Lovecraftian-esque design. It's brilliant, captifying, and the special effects, although easily outdated, are so beautifully incorporated that it hasn't gone out of style. This is the type of horror that needs to be noted for future generations as something to aspire to achieve.
Extremely well done and I can almost guarantee that I will come back to re-watch this in another decades time and will enjoy it all the same.
