I went in with low expectations. Had read/seen some negative comments, but fortunately no spoilers.
Took me about 15 minutes to realize how well it was construed - an intriguing plot.
Someone mentioned the X-Files and "Stranger Things". Both probably inspired this movie. The casting is great. I was actually rooting for the characters. They are interesting, likable and believable.
The story line is not at all predictable. It could go many different ways.
Watching this movie felt satisfying. As action movies should. A feast for the eyes. Double the pleasure if you like guns, especially sniper rifles.

This movie rocks - and you don't even have to know the Judge Dredd character to enjoy it!
If you do know Judge Dredd, you will find that this is an almost perfect adaptation of his iconic character. For starters, Judge Dredd never takes off his helmet, as it should be!
The actors are amazing, their acting is flawless - they pull you into the story with it's post-apocalyptic environment and never let go.
The male lead character, Judge Dredd, has the rock-solid confidence that comes with a very long career working as a bad-ass cop in an extremely dangerous environment. He is paired with a young woman with extraordinary abilities, but no experience. She is hesitant, intimidated, scared and makes some serious mistakes, at first. She has to learn and grow before she can hold her own.
The lead opponent is another female character and totally believable as psychopathic boss of a criminal gang. She doesn't over-play it at all - she conveys the impression that all the bad guys around her just know what she is capable of and they fear and respect her.
If Hollywood had always created such believable, well acted female characters and had never tried to make the male characters weak, stupid and evil in order to make some annoying female Marie-Sue look stronger, they might never have lost the respect of the audience.
This is a quintessential movie.
