There are some bad reviews written about this movie. But I think it's misunderstood by some what this movie is trying to be. Is everything that happens in the film realistic? No. It's not trying to be. Shayamalan is self aware of this, and he uses his unique style to take an intriguing story, and make it very entertaining in a way that only he can. If you go into the film with an open mind and don't let a few moments of mediocre acting here and there bother you, you'll definitely enjoy. One particular strength of the film, which is rare is find, is that it builds and builds and gets better and better toward the end. Not all movies achieve that, particularly in this genre. If you're an M Night Shayamalan fan, this movie will not disappoint. It's one of his best in my opinion.
This film is a parallel to Job from the Bible. Truth is, watching this film made me feel like I was being punished. It was that bad. I felt like I was Job. I leaned over to my wife and asked if she wanted to leave the theater. In our fifteen years of marriage I have never done that. The film was too long. Too boring. Too scattered. Didn't make sense. And lacked cohesion and rhythm. It's hard to describe how bad it was. I do like some of the messages portrayed here. But it was essentially a mix of Dr Strange, hallmark, marvel multiverse, and a Christian background. It didn't feel like a sci-fi or a romance or a drama. It didn't know what it was. So it ended up being very poor.
Just overall a terrible disappointment. How Matt Damon got to a point in husband career where he thought this film was a good idea, I will never understand.
