  • Entertaining, but Lacking the Soul of its Predecessor

Gladiator 2 delivers exactly what you expect: a grand spectacle with intense action and violence that keeps you entertained on the big screen. But while it does provide thrilling moments, the film lacks the depth and emotional weight that made the original Gladiator a timeless classic.

The first Gladiator had a soul-an emotional core that resonated with audiences, blending brutal action with complex characters and themes of revenge, honor, and redemption. In contrast, Gladiator 2 seems more focused on spectacle and violence as the primary driving force. It's undeniably entertaining, especially in a theater, but it doesn't feel like it will endure in the cultural consciousness the way the first film has. The story, while solid, doesn't carry the same emotional impact, and the characters, despite some solid performances, don't evoke the same lasting connection.

There's also a sense that Ridley Scott, now much older, is leaning more heavily on fast-paced action and dramatic visuals, perhaps wanting to deliver something more immediate and accessible. This is a trend I've noticed in his recent films like Napoleon and Alien: Covenant, where the emphasis seems to be on spectacle rather than substance. While Scott is undeniably one of the greatest filmmakers of his era, I can't help but feel that in Gladiator 2, there's a rush to get to the action, with less room for the deeper emotional and philosophical explorations that made the first film resonate so powerfully.

I can't help but imagine what Gladiator 2 could have been if it had been directed in collaboration with someone like Denis Villeneuve. With Villeneuve's knack for blending grand spectacle with thoughtful storytelling, a partnership with Scott could have elevated this sequel to something truly extraordinary. Instead, what we get is a solid, albeit forgettable, action film.

In the end, Gladiator 2 is worth watching for its entertainment value-there's no denying the thrill of the big-screen experience-but don't expect it to leave a lasting impression. It doesn't quite belong in the same league as its predecessor, and while it's a fun ride, it's unlikely to be remembered as one of the greats.

  • It was too short !!!!

Wow, I had not seen something like this for a long time. Amazing esthetic. Villeneuve is these days to the cinema what Steve Jobs was to the tech industry. A visionnaire who can ensure his vision is carefully crafted and delivered. Hope you'll enjoy this movie as much as I did.

  • We are Venom

Here is a movie where the trailers set the right expectation. It's clearly not the movie of the year but far from the worst. If you were convinced by the teasers then go for it. It's entertaining and funny. Tom Hardy is carrying a lot on his shoulders and it works! Definitely worth paying to watch on the big screen.
