I like how some of the highly-rated reviews are from very recent accounts lol. Esmeralda, is that you?
The Office was so beloved because it was exaggerated characters playing normal people. The Paper feels like normal people playing normal people. Apparently everyone had the same desire Ryan had, because nobody has a "thing." Except maybe the stupid guy, and it just doesn't seem to work. We don't need a "stupid" guy. We need a guy with a thing who happens to not be very bright (like Dwight).
Most people are also way too soft spoken. I mean, speak up! So much mumbling in this show. The black guy (I can't remember most people's names because it's too boring) talking to the Asian girl is so annoying because they're both so quiet. Even when people would whisper in The Office, it was more understandable. And also, leave her alone dude, she's not interested. The Asian girl seemed like she was depressed all the time, and not in a funny sitcom type way. It's like nobody had any directing at all, unless the directing was, "Just act and talk like you normally would."
The number 1 thing that would make this show better is getting rid of Esmeralda. She doesn't try at all. There's no acting ability. The actors in The Office understood acting. That it's more than delivering lines. It's every facial nuance. It's perfect body language. And good line delivery. In The Paper, nobody acts very well aside from the main guy and the main girl (and then, most of the time they're just trying to work with bad scene partners.) But Esmeralda? She doesn't try at aaallll. It's like she thinks she can just flail around and say the line and that's all it took. I'm not sure how anyone thought casting her was a good idea.
It's like she intentionally tried to overpower every scene she was in. She didn't care about working with her scene partners or making them look good. It's like she wanted to come across as the star of the show and make it all about herself. But I don't think I could ever watch her in anything else without feeling annoyed after seeing this character. That's how annoying this character is.
The 2nd thing they can do to improve this is telling everyone to liven up. STOP ACTING DEPRESSED ALL THE TIME! Speak up, have a personality, act like you want to be there. I feel like the Asian girl was supposed to be a Rosa Diaz type character from Brooklyn Nine Nine, or Aubrey Plaza's character in Parks and Rec, but doesn't pull it off because of how low energy she is. The others had real personality, the girl in The Paper just depresses me.
I thought the black girl was going to be my favorite character because of her style, but she's completely useless and boring.
The Softees guy (who works with the toilet paper) just seemed like he didn't want to be there. We need a character who's lazy, not an actor who's lazy. The toilet paper/newspaper stuff could be fun, but they never play off it of it in any meaningful way.
When the janitor guy showed up and talked to the camera, it was refreshing because he actually had energy and talked to the camera like they were making a documentary. It's stupid how something so little felt refreshing to me lol
The 3rd thing they can do is give people a "thing." Stanley had a thing. Angela had a thing. Nobody here has a thing, and so all their personalities meld together into nothing.
The 4th thing is get better writers. It's astounding what the writers think makes good humor. It's like a middle schooler's idea of humor. And I don't mean some crass toilet humor...I mean, it's just plain stupid.
And some other writing just needs a better person to deliver it. Like when Esmeralda said, "Since when is sensation a bad thing? Just ask a pack of condoms." (or something). Dwight would have delivered it well. Most of the time, I'm imagining the cast from the Office delivering the lines because it's done sooo poorly here with no umph. Seriously, the line delivery needs more umph and needs to feel more deliberate. It needs real directing. And some of the lines are way too drawn out. Like, spit it out!
The last thing they can do to make it better is to make speaking to the camera feel meaningful. Most of the time I forget if anyone has even spoken to the camera in the past 15 minutes. It feels like a gimmick rather than a meaningful part of the show. Or things like the camera looking through the blinds. In The Office, it felt like it had purpose. In this it feels like it's just doing it because it feels like it needs to do it.
Something they can't really change now, is it doesn't feel intimate. In The Office, you had a small office, small building, small city. Everything is too open here. It doesn't feel intimate enough.
The line in the first episode about Superman/Clark Kent was perfect because it was definitely a line Michael would have said lol.
It's like Americans were trying to do slow British humor but didn't quite understand how to pull it off.
The main guy is good. But he needs better scene partners, better writing, and better episode concepts (though some of them were good, like testing products...the writers just made it fall sooo flat.)

It would have been so much better without a laugh track. It's not even a show that made sense to have one. I get why shows use them but it's so stupid. How about just making a cry track also for emotional moments so I know I need to feel sad. This trend needs to die.
