I don't particularly care for aged actors who try to stay in the game even if the movie part is tailored around their aging circumstances. We get an aging, should retire, in the movie & outside the movie, man, played reasonably well, who is not current on real life but growing old life in a clingy way. It plays out mostly in Mexico where according to this move, law & order are questionable & your quality of life is in jeopardy if you speak up. If you lay low, eat your tortillas & mind your own business, even a cop can have a decent life in a corrupt setting but at a personal integrity cost. The story becomes predictable at some point & the ending, while it could have cliched, ends on a Disney-type note, not a bad thing but more emotional fantasy than reality. Movies are supposed to entertain us which exempts them at times from error & indifference. Watch this not for the love of it, but for the fact it showed up to be watched. Just do it.
Excellent portrayal of real, gut wrench level life coming your way, when you least expect it, how you react or don't, & what becomes of all the suffering from this visiting life lesson. I did some jail counseling for two years & can report the accuracy of the theme & how people handle it. In this movie, the cliché of: "you can't fight city hall" is splashed all over you & seeing how the different people cope or withdraw hits the butterflies that live in your own stomach. Couldn't happen to you? LOL as when you say or think that, guess what you are summoning. The movie drives home powerlessness or surrender to a greater more powerful unloving system. The actors held up quite well & any hidden judgments within the viewer are exposed. It's raw at times but that is what makes it memorable & seals the lesson presented. Be careful not to feel sorry for criminals as no one accidently puts themselves in jail, court systems etc., but instead say to yourself: God help me to stay out of these events similar to the Lord's prayer asking not to be led into a temptation & to just learn a lesson in the e-z stages. Just make me reachable & teachable & spare me the hard-knock journey depicted in this movie. Let what this movie can do, do for you, whatever that is. Thank you & behave.
Most excellent story telling at its finest just when you thought the subject matter i.e. Frankenstein had its day. This brings us current with a fresh perspective with a haunting theme for all involved. The ending leaves & leads one into their own mind where the story continues. That's how pleasant & satisfying this version is. It must be said that having an intelligent writer, director & actors making the rounds in this movie is way overdue. Hollywood should take note & stop with the shoot-outs, drug movies, fantasies, boring sci-fi & all the rest. Instead of return on investment coming first, how about return on movie watching quality then the money will flow. Anyone remember Star Wars & Indiana Jones both groundbreaking? How about the quality stories & acting from the 40's, 50's & scattered here & there. The audience has to be served, entertained, amused, thrilled & not the other way around where we have to help the story along, the director, etc., & do the work to enjoy a flick. Whatever happened to the feeling one gets from wondering "what happens next", a thrill, & the grip that comes with it? Nicely done here. Keep up the good work too.
