I’m passionate about storytelling, which means I tend to critique scripts sharply, especially given how much I’ve seen over the years.

Does the craft become less gratifying because we indulge in it so often? Maybe. My sensibilities have certainly dulled over time, and it's harder not to compare new releases to old entries we hold dear. Even more elusive is the thrill of seeing something done brilliantly for the first time. Still, I try to keep an open mind, but reviewing based on my enjoyment first and their intention second. No film gets a perfect 10, much less a 0. Perfection is unreachable, and by that same logic, no effort should be dismissed. There’s always a little something worth appreciating.. finding nuggets of gold in unexpected places! A intriguing camera trick, the chemistry between two actors, a magical moment that exceeds expectations or the rare film that completely blows you away. I never forget I haven’t seen it all yet.

  • "I must think of a new plan. I'm going home."

Something about two ninja groups fighting each other for some unexplained goal, following a strict code or facing death, a secret that must be kept at all cost.. and then a ninja child that can fly and kills everyone without hesitation using his impressive ninja techniques. Is this for children? Is this for grown-ups? It somehow feels like it isn't for anyone.

    ---

This is a movie adaptation of a manga by Shirato Sanpei. From what little I've seen, this might as well be the greatest adaptation!

Nonsensical techniques, nonsensical developments, nonsensical plot and script. Weird characters skin-painted in different colors.. almost out of a cartoon. There's little reason for anything that happens. It is completely and utterly unfollowable.. and so, joyless and unsatisfactory.

There are some neat camera tricks and choreographies, but all in the service of nothing.. which is sad, because with a little constraint all these elements could have been used to tell something.

  • "Such good manners, huh"

On a quarantined island of England, there's a small group of people strive to survive. A young chand embarks on a journey to try and save his mom.

I didn't know what to expect exactly.. and that was exactly right.

The story has a very straightforward script, lots of "zombie killing" scenes to fill in the time, some beautiful shots, and decent acting. The dialogue and developments aren't very memorable, but it is still enjoyable.

And while it is different and well produced, I feel there are too many negatives that prevented me from enjoying it. From a clumsy and erratic editing, to a clashing and almost-comedic tone in parts. It also tries to give us worldbuilding from a place that has from changed too much from what we know, but doesn't get there and it doesn't make it particularly hard for us to relate to the story of this small family.

There doesn't seem to be a message or weight, it just is.. which I found very disappointing. As a "horror" movie, it falls short.

  • "In this job.. different is inadvisable"

The story of a professional Assassin for hire, executing one specific hit worth millions and a lot of fallout.. as both the killer and those chasing him show that these jobs cannot be done without sacrifice or leading two parallel lives.

It is a very well written story, with some unexpected and very welcome twists and developments.

It is not entirely efficient (at 11 episodes of around 1 hour), with the pacing slowing down constantly and some sections that aren't particularly appealing (the background filler and social drama that is expected). It has great production, some nice tricks and very good performances! I particularly enjoyed Úrsula Corberó as the "esposa ingenua" just trying to lead a normal life.

Didn't find the ending particularly satisfying, but it isn't terrible. And overall, I would recommend for fans of the spy thriller genre.
