I'm a huge HP Lovecraft fan and this adaptation was the best of any on film I've seen to date. I was really hoping for a trilogy. It definitely deviates from the source material but there's enough Easter eggs and call backs in the film that pays its respects to the author. All the actors young and old did a great job with their characters and I really liked the new character Ward. His narration was spot on. The special effects were fantastic. If you're passionate about Cosmic Horror keep an open mind and give this one a try. I really enjoyed it and I hope to see more adaptations like it in the future.
I didn't see this in theaters because I have to admit that I'm weary of the "Girlboss" trend. Many action movies and shows feature the same stoic, invincible character that have very little development or weaknesses that help the audience get attached to the protagonist. ATJ did a good job with what she was given, and honestly it's very little. She was expressive and emotive despite being mostly silent. The film was definitely messier than Fury Road in terms of visuals and cohesion. I really enjoyed watching Chris Hemsworth go all in on a ludicrous and charismatic antagonist, he seemed to be enjoying himself.
