A lively cast and super animation don't make up for a run of the mill, written by numbers script. Feels like it was written and directed by AI to please viewers who are busy looking at their phones rather than the screen. Those who do look will see an eclectic mix of robot characters set in a bizarre recreation of the late 1990s where technology that is impossible today sits alongside bulky desktop computers and analogue phones. I would feel very disappointed if I had to pay for this in the cinema but because it comes with my tv package I gave it a go. The reputed $300m spent was undoubtedly wasted.

This movie skips cleanly between reality and the surreal without being too challenging in its story line. It tells a moving story of young people who don't fit in, finding companionship in their shared love of a youth tv show. The characters are engaging and feel real, and when the plot moves into more threatening territory you worry for them. Good performances from the leads and clever low budget effects that enhance the viewer's unease about what may happen next. Reminds me a lot of the atmosphere generated in Donny Darko, but in its own way. Its a refreshing change from big star vehicles, remakes, and overblown horror franchises.

Well made and beautifully directed depiction of the American bomber experience in WW2 Europe, although the script lacks the engagement of Band of Brothers or even the weaker series, The Pacific. However, the quality of this telemovie was seriously let down by its negative depiction of the RAF and significant factual omissions. The men of the RAF also suffered horrendous losses, were also just young men from all walks of life and social class, and the Lancaster bomber was technically a far superior aircraft than the B17, good as it was too. This show could have been great but is actually really disappointing for these reasons.
