This has to be the Best martial arts/ Kung Fu movie of the era! It can be hard to follow though so you must pay attention. There are 3 major guys who look alike and have similar sounding names even and then there are 2, 3 or 4 old master types who all look identical and in fact 2 of them are brothers in the film... LOL. I have to rewatch it of course to see if I have exaggerated too much for this review but as far as bad guys go, this bad master is one of the toughest I've seen in these kinds of movies. There are many fight scenes and most of the fighting is pretty realistic if you can suspend your disbelief of course and all are well choreographed.
No athe will like this movie because it will shake his personal belief about God to his core. Worse, these athes will rate the movie poorly to discourage others from seeing it and hearing the Truth when in fact, if the movie was fictional, it is still a well made movie. Definitely not a B movie! There are no A-listers but still good acting and writing. But the movie is NOT fiction, it is a true story so I recommend all believers in God and others who are spiritual to see this movie. It will reaffirm your beliefs or previous beliefs if you've lost hope or experienced any doubts about God. Just knowing the things revealed in this movie are for real will give you hope and restore your Faith. In this evil world around us, we need all the hope we can get!
I only gave this movie an 8 because it was just a hair too slow paced. Just a hair though, in my opinion. The writing/the concepts were first rate. The performances of the three main actors, Fishburne, Torres and Phillipe were the best of their careers probably. I was totally convinced they were who their characters were supposed to be. They owned their respective roles so any fan of these three will love this work.
This 2006 genre movie was preceded by the 1976 "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman and itself preceded one of my favorite movies, the 2010 "Unthinkable" with Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie Ann Moss. If you liked either of those two you will like this one also.
Anyone who's never traveled to a third world or Muslim or Arabic country before will have no trouble believing that this is exactly what could happen to an American or European tourist etc. That's part of what makes this movie so real. It's believable.
