This film is truly haunting. Though it is based on fictitious characters, that does not in any way diminish the profound emotions one experiences during this film. There is such an incredible sense of frailty in the film, and one cannot help but be consumed by the reality of the experience. Asa Butterfield's performance is so incredibly perfect that one forgets they are watching a film. There is a sense of innocence in his performance that lends itself beautifully to the utter despair one feels while experiencing this film for the first time. Bruno truly encompasses all the innocence and humanity that was lost during the Holocaust. In turn, this film begs us to remember that while compassion was lost for many, the beauty of friendship can never be destroyed.
While some producers may find the idea of writing a love story based on an illness a bit taboo, I found this film to be beautifully gritty, honest and poignant. Anne Hathaway did an incredibly job portraying a character that is admittedly flawed. Her ability to create such a well rounded character, with such a sense of strength and at the same time vulnerability was truly magic. Her pain was so raw that it couldn't help but strike a nerve in any viewer. Anne's presence was profound in this film. This film had the perfect balance of lighthearted fun and raw emotion to please a wide range of viewers. The director succeeded in their efforts to create a film that introduced the viewer to the harsh realities we all must endure, while still allowing us to experience the unwavering love that lies in all of us.
