After a lukewarm marriage of over twenty years, a woman appeals to her husband's compassion to obtain the desirable divorce document in front of a court, which proves to be more challenging than she would expect.
DirectorsRonit ElkabetzShlomi ElkabetzStarsRonit ElkabetzSimon AbkarianGabi Amrani
Like the movie often claims: 'ze normal'. An Israeli secular woman (played by one of the directors, Elkabetz) requests a divorce from her husband (Simon Abkarian) in a country where courts are lead by rabbis, where there is no marriage or divorce other than the religious addressed. The movie shows the urge to find a solution to a sterile problem in israel: there's a reason why in 1789, the separation of church and state took place. According to his principle of the social contract, Locke argued that the government lacked authority in the realm of individual conscience, as this was something rational people could not cede to the government for it or others to control. For Locke, this created a natural right in the liberty of conscience, which he argued must therefore remain protected from any government authority. These views on religious tolerance and the importance of individual conscience, along with his social contract, became particularly influential in the American colonies and the drafting of the United States Constitution. Therefore, it is time that Israel (300 years later) let this sort of legal decisions in the hands (or minds) of people with a judgement capable of taking a fair trail, without leaving trail of misogyny, obsolete traditions, and lack of judgment get on the way.
To many, the movie itself leads the spectator into total despair, it irritates them, brings them to the edge: well, fortunately they are just 'watching' the situation in a 2 hour film; now picture the situation in real life, how does that women must feel, daily, in each hour, minute, every second of their miserable existence because of this 'unjust trails'?
The movie is slow, just as their situations. It is desperate, as well as this so called 'beit din'. The film asfixiates the public, just as much as it does to the people being trailed. Not easy to watch, not easy to live.
The film portrays a reality not easy to digest, its a burden. The Talmud says: pity the city whose judges need to be judged. Sadly, this applies to modern Israel: Its judicial system, iys methods, and its judges, need a fair trail, they, for God's sake, must be judged

Mason: Then tell me. That's how this works. You talk to me about it so that I can take your hand and fucking walk through this shit with you. That is what I signed up for, Okay? But I cannot do that if you won't let me in."
I'm fascinated by the cast, the narrative, everything about this movie is wonderful. Hope to watch it again soon.

Excelente filme. Rate score: 10/10

At the dawn of World War III, a man searches for a way to restore peace to the world and finds he must give something in return.
    DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsErland JosephsonSusan FleetwoodAllan Edwall
this will never cease to be my favorite film, its is the 14th time that I watched it :) I can contemplate it's beauty over and over for the rest of my days and still think of it as a true work of art.  The music of Bach throughout the film makes the spectator shake and even feel the absence/presence of the divine among the simple but yet beautiful atmospheres that Tarkovsky shows and reveal to us. The symbolism that every word, every image and every sound holds along with Leonardo da Vinci's first painting 'the adoration of magi' makes this even harder for the spectator to keep its spirituality untouched and uncorrupted. This masterpiece goes deep into every man's fear, dream, expectation, and every single drop of mysticism of  his shall be heightened. While you watch this and carefully contemplate it, as if you're in front of Eugène's
Delacroix 'La Liberté guidant le peuple', or Fragonard's 'The Swing', Picasso's 'Guernica' or Rembrandt's 'De Nachtwacht', you shall not only be able to feel the despair and anguish of the characters but also you'll get to understand every inch of their thoughts and hopes.
Tarkovsky's game of lights it's as dramatic as in any Shakespeare's tragedy, and as comforting as the Spiritual Canticle of San Juan de la Cruz. This film lacks of dialog between characters but yet it seems like tarokovsky's intention wasn't to make its characters talk to one another but rather to let them establish a dialog with god to restore the balance lost because the lack of faith, the troubles of a final war, the deaths, the loss, the grief, despair, the absence of sense and presence of fear. This film also needs no dialog because it is not about uttering banal and broken words into the air that will not be listened. That is why tarkovsky preferred the monologue resource and
in that way he opens the quest of every character to search for meaning, hope, forgiveness and indeed Sacrifice. This film is beautiful, elegant, simple, introspective, and owner of an apocalyptic and mystical tone that no one will be able to equal. This is one of the few films that can be considered a piece of art for generations to come.
For those who said this is long, I tell you: this is not long, it's eternal. And so is Tarkovsky's legacy.
