Many others have written that this was superb and so realistic, except Elsa Dutton's story.
As a European watcher, I liked pretty much ONLY that Elsa character and her storylines. And sceneries, although they were not as magnificent as the characters repeatedly said. It took ages for them to even get out of flat Texas.
Otherwise it was just depressing, watching hours and hours of confrontations between good American gunmen and bad and stupid people of various backgrounds. Recent European immigrants were depicted as total idiots.
Not realistic any more than the Little House on the Prairie tv series - which is quite different from original novels - just a 100% more violent fantasy for American patriotic and bloodthirsty viewers.

Scheming. Betrayals. Battle after another. Torture. Graphic violence.
Definitely not a feel-good series, nor suitable for kids, but the plot is interesting, and especially Jennifer Connelly and Sean Bean are good matches for their roles.
At first I thought that the idea of a train as an ark is ridiculous, but it is explained well enough over time how it could work, at least for a few years, so that I could continue watching.

So you should leave your job and become a saint to be even a proper stepmom, let alone a proper mom. If you are a dad, just go to work!
The movie itself deserves maybe 6/10. The main actors are all great, including the kids, the movie looks good, and so on - but the script is very cheesy and rather predictable. An extra star given for hilarious/disturbing (depends on the point of view) description of traditional family roles in the USA.
