As someone who has read and loved Anne Rice's Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy, I went into AMC's Mayfair Witches with cautious optimism. Unfortunately, what we got was not just a watered-down version of the books. It was a complete derailment of the original story with baffling omissions, wildly off-base casting choices, and tone-deaf creative decisions that stripped away everything that made the novels compelling.
The Most Unforgivable Omission: Michael Curry Leaving out Michael Curry, one of the most important characters in the trilogy, was the first red flag. In the books, Michael's relationship with Rowan is central, and his psychic abilities give the entire plot emotional weight. Removing him does not just cut a character, it unravels the heart of the story. His absence makes the series feel hollow and disconnected from Rice's vision.
Lasher: From Irresistible to Revolting In the books, Lasher is dangerous but magnetic. He is charismatic, physically alluring, and a figure witches cannot help but be drawn to despite the danger. The series took that and somehow cast the least convincing supernatural seducer imaginable. Instead of a dark, otherworldly charm, we got a greasy, second-rate used car salesman vibe. There was zero chemistry and zero allure. This was one of the worst casting choices I have ever seen.
Deirdre's Contacts: A Distracting Disaster Whoever decided to slap those horrific, cheap-looking eye contacts on Deirdre should be banned from costuming for life. They were so unnatural they pulled me out of every scene she was in. They did not enhance the character, they made her look like she wandered in from a bad Halloween party.
Rowan's Complete Mismatch Book Rowan is supposed to be androgynous yet striking, with ashen blonde hair and grey eyes. She has a unique beauty that sets her apart. Instead, AMC cast Alexandra Daddario, whose look and acting style are nothing like the character as written. Daddario essentially plays the same version of herself in every role. The result is a flat, predictable performance that does nothing to bring Rowan to life.
Story Changes That Defy Logic The series strays so far from Anne Rice's original plot that it is barely recognizable. Core relationships are erased, lore is gutted, and the dark, sensual Gothic tone is replaced with something cheap and directionless. Anne Rice would be rolling in her grave.
Final Verdict For fans of the books, this adaptation is not just disappointing, it is insulting. It feels like the creators did not understand, respect, or even like the source material. If you have not read the books, you might find it passable as generic supernatural TV. But if you have, prepare for frustration on every front.

This movie was so intense. The music score was really good at setting a daunting feeling.
The primary actor was incredible. You forget that he's acting. Absolutely Oscar worthy performance.
I would give this more stars if I could. I was stunned during most of the film.
This movie is an intimate and unique perspective of the life of a soldier during world war 1. The highs and the lows are so incredible. I cried more than I smiled or laughed and it made me hate eat even more, especially what it does to people. Politicians and others who aren't even involved on the battlefield making the decisions. It's awful. This movie is not.. It was so well done.
