  • A really creatuve run of whodunnit? And a spiral from that...

As soon as this started I was really happy to watch the grey, sort of murky vibe of what the Island had in store. The quick little sketches of the characters were nice and wow it was shot beautifully as a first thought. I liked the way a bit of Southern charm was in the voices of the couple arriving on the island and how the wife had to really hold back to do pregnant mommy duty or setup the new home on the husband's first day as a cop there.

As the story unfolded it felt a bit like a fun stage play, how the Coen Brothers have set things up in the past, even a few Tarantino story jumps here and there. It felt like a good grouping of story ideas that danced around and asked you if you knew what was going to happen next. As each actor and the production team colored in the lines of the story it kept me entertained by their actions and really moody kinetics in the film.

Something I enjoyed a lot was seeing Jim Gaffigan sort of morph into his character and all the others did great as well. I really didn't mind the skipping stone style of the story with "and then..." which was fun to me. I supposed this type of film is made for a specific audience that like these modern theatre play in a film environment and if you like that you could really have a weekend flick at night, enjoying the human catastrophes that unfold because of greedy people.

  • one of the best in the series

I thought a YT variation was going to not be the best choice, then the instant I was put on a mining colony in space and our heroine was protecting her android 'brother' I knew it was going to be fun. The special effects, sounds, environment were almost exactly what was in the video game Alien Isolation which is a great thing.

It really felt like there might be hope, and you maybe could get away each and every time, but how to lead us there is what makes the tempo of this film work well. It really won't be one of those moments where you will think "wow, it's so new" but it is so good at what it is.

A horror film in space. A fear factor film about AI. The little guy (gal) against the corporate machine. Check marks galore and wow what a fun ride this one was. If you're new to the Alien franchise, you can go back and watch the original Alien and then Aliens to really get a feel of this one. I would love to see a really good PCVR ray traced version of this as a game with some variations on a theme (DLC etc) like Alien Isolation. The film uses a feeling of real time narrative in the second half which would really lend itself to a VR gaming treatment.

This is without a doubt a great addition to a sci fi series that keeps me coming back for more.

  • A Wild Ride If You're Young Enough To Laugh About It

As soon as the film starts, the dialog is stage play heavy and similar to a mad magazine meets twilight zone entry. Having fun with the dialog like stand up comedy and heavier moments in between make it a really cool comic book come to life. Something about it set in Philly in 1999 makes it just grimy enough to follow this road trip down South with the leads.

I love stories that break in and out of the past and present to give us a stained glass look at something like growing up and being different in all it's wonder. This really does a great job in lighting, kinetics and audio to make us weave in and out of the 'present' moment of their trip. The absurdity of the scenes are great, it's really like R. Crumb come to life on screen a little John Waters too.

There's a bit of indie art film in it, it doesn't try too hard to do those super serious grandiose shots and keeps grounded for the most part with closer shots and really quiet to loud moments making it silly. This plays out like a fun acid trip or drunken recollection of what happened one trip down to wherever. Actually it also feels a bit like Natural Born Killers and Raising Arizona too.

If you're not afraid of a incredibly odd journey with two charismatic lesbians and a few dangerous dildos then you might just have a fun time taking this one in.
