I've been watching movies for 60 years and this is the bleakest, most unremittingly depressing movie I've ever seen. Still, I couldn't stop watching because of the absolutely magnificent performance of Fame Edith Evans. Riveting is the best word I can use to describe her tour de force.
Eric Portman is deliciously scummy as a hopeless n'er do well who recognizes his wife's suffering but can't bring himself to do anything but "seize the main chance".
Bryan Forbes and the cinematographer do an outstanding job of capturing the filth, grime, and hopelessness of Manchester in the welfare state of the sixties.
Very hard to watch, but very well done.

Very hard to watch, but very well done.
An excellent story spoiled by very poor direction and mediocre acting.
Very disappointed because I have much higher expectations for a project with Ben Affleck involved.
Toward the end this movie devolves into totally ludicrous hokiness, almost as bad as those ridiculous comic strip "hero" movies. Even if you can suspend your disbelief, the wildly implausible shooting scenes become hugely distracting - they're so unrealistic that it becomes your focus.
It's too bad - the storyline could have been made into a great movie. I hope that a good director and a good screenwriter can get together on a remake and do this justice.
