  • Great doco about a brilliant band

As a lifelong fan of Midnight Oil, what struck me while watching this documentary is how close the band was. They perfectly complemented each other on stage and seemed united in purpose off stage. It is a bit eerie. There are no tantrums and no descents into drugs and alcohol abuse. At least, that we can see. Peter Garrett and Rob Hirst are very strong characters who are very stubborn, but that is what kept the band focussed and determined not to be like other bands.

I love the early scenes of perfectly happy crowds, dancing and singing happily to their songs. While for a long time they were not hugely successful, they had loyal, adoring fans all over Australia.

The doco also shows how they truly earned their success. They were ambitious in their own way. They took risks, like trips to the Australian outback, overseas tours and playing on a truck illegally in Manhattan to protest the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Iliked the segments on working with great producers like Glyn Johns and Nick Launay.

This is a loving, very good look back at a great band.

  • A lovely movie

Clueless is a curious movie. It's essentially Mean Girls without the mean. It doesn't have a lot of plot. But Alicia Silverstone is utterly perfect for the role of Cher, the sweet, guileless rich girl who is funny and sociable and impossible to dislike. As her wry, super smart step-brother and later love interest Jeff, Paul Rudd is also perfect, recognising that Cher is not as ditzy as she makes out. She is actually very intelligent. Jeff is staying with Cher because her Dad, his former step-Dad, is one of the only people who cared for him. Silverstone and Rudd and also Cher and her two friends, have great chemistry. The script zings along. It's witty and warm, without being annoying. Amy Heckerling should be proud of creating one of the good teen movies.

  • Amazing show

While not laugh out loud funny, I love watching this show. It is very under-rated, not just because it's about a smart, sardonic, middle class Asian-American family. All the characters are intelligent and self-parodying. It's good that the grandmother speaks in her own language and has sub-titles. It probably could be a little edgier. Apparently the dad was going to be meaner. I find him the most annoying character.

My favourite character is the mother, who is the toughest and most confident character. The kids are actual smart and not silly extras like in other series.

It's fantastic that there were six seasons, albeit fairly low-key ones.
