  • Solid enough but Paul Mescal is like a cardboard cutout

As a historical action movie, it's fine, I guess. Nothing special. Often just feels like a shot-for-shot remake of the original, with a few new bits thrown in (namely the opening sequences).

Paul Mescal just seems like another Sam Worthington; an averagely ruggedly handsome guy, with little in the way of personality & often just seems like somebody made a cardboard cutout and stuck it in a scene. His face barely changes, regardless of what the scene requires, apart from a couple of scenes where he's required to seem angry and shout a bit. He just seems like a blank slate and offers little in the way of the gravitas or charisma that Russell Crowe gave to the original movie.

Denzel Washington largely carries the movie on his back but even he just seems like he's going through the motions a lot of the time.

Some decent action sequences but the choreography even seems a bit so-so, more like scenes you'd seen in a movie from 40-50 years ago where it's obviously just fake fighting, which felt far below the level of quality of the first one. While the OG Gladiator wasn't really full of depth and soul, it at least wore its heart on its sleeve, even if what it was trying to convey was a little clumsy at times.

Overall, a solid enough film. Nothing to shout about & probably something you'd only put on if you needed something mindless to watch.
