A long time ago I enjoyed Police Squad and the Naked Gun films.

I'm wondering whether I'd find them as funny now as I did back then because this remake sticks to the same formula in every way, with the same style of gags, and yet I didn't laugh once (maybe a smile at the OJ Simpson gag).

The format was original back then. Though much of the humour was similar to, if not quite as good as, the Farrelly bros films.

I think the original gags, even whilst they were meant to be pretty corny, were better. The laboured coffee cup thing in this one isn't even witty to begin with. I also believe that, whilst Neeson can certainly do deadpan, he's just not in the same comedy acting league as Leslie Neilson.

So overall this is one to avoid.

Geoffrey Rush really looks a lot like Sellers here. Particularly from the early sixties on after Sellers shed a lot of weight.

There are some recreations of partial scenes. I enjoyed the one where Sellers slips on the revolving globe in The Pink Panther.

So it's entertaining, with a few laughs.

Some of Sellers's relationships are explored, such as with his kids his wives and Sophia Loren. Others are largely ignored such as with the other Goons, various other mainly British actors who were regulars in his films and some of whom, such as Graham Stark, also close friends, as well as ambiguous connections like Orson Welles or Princess Margaret. In her case the fact she was probably still anlive while the film was in creation may be an factor. And his dark side comes through throughout the film.

In order to see Sellers's genius though you'd need to watch his films. And you could do worse than dwell on the two he made with Kubrick. Because, no matter how good Rush is, the recreations of scenes cannot capture the real real genius of this mad man.

  • A solid 6

There are a lot of amusing lines and a couple of laugh out loud moments, which makes this better than most comedy films these days.

I really think, though, that, headed by talents such as the two leads here, it should have been better than it is. The fault may be in the script or the direction. I can't quite put my finger on it. There is discord, which is fuelled, on his part by sense of failure exacerbated by her success and on her's by I'm not sure what, but perhaps also his failure. The 'war' though takes a long time to take off and is never quite believable.
