I didn't have high expectations - but I did have the advantage of not caring whether it respected the original series or not. I was (i) delighted it was a period piece, (ii) found the humour and twists great fun, and (iii) really impressed by the three central performances by Henry Cavill, Alicia Vikander and Arnie Hammer. If you want real world grit and reality, this is not for you. But if you like James Bond, glamour, style, locations, charm - with action - this film has the full package., To be fair - I cannot remember the original series very well, and therefore in changes in the characterisations could not grate with me,. Your mileage my vary. I have found it highly rewatchable.
