This movie is what I like to call a great Saturday afternoon movie. Another reviewer compared it to some of the fun 80s movies. Doesn't take itself too seriously, lots of great actors, and enough interesting characters to keep you watching. Plus fun futuristic effects. I would love for it to have been a series where I could keep watching the young Eli grow. I gave an extra star and bonus points for dialog that doesn't require bleeping every other word. That's difficult to find anymore.
I know it's hard to get past expectations when taking on beloved source material, but if you can watch with fresh eyes, or the eyes of a younger viewer, you would enjoy this! The storyline and characters may be slightly different from the originals, but they are still fun and compelling, and I care about what happens to them. Yes, sometimes the young protagonists can be annoying, but they are teenagers! Goes with the territory. I also appreciate how they incorporate the importance of mental health, so important these days. I also truly enjoy the actors they chose and I especially think Christian Slater makes an excellent therapist/whatever. Give this series a chance...
