  • Missed the mark

Pros: Well animated, both the traditional 2D art style and the 3D style. Songs are beautiful and well performed. The depiction of the the main character's struggle with her traumatic experience is powerful and moving.

Cons: The pacing is extremely poor. The story introduces a myriad of characters, events and conflicts one after another that cause a significant amount of confusion, while also focusing on side arcs that are not important to the main story. The transition between the 2D and 3D style happens so abruptly that it feels like you are watching two entirely different movies. Characters are extremely archetypical so much so that they are awkward and unbelievable. There is very little character development for any of the characters other than the main character, Suzu, which also is lacking. Key story elements are missing or introduced throughout the story at unusual times, making it difficult to understand character's motivations without significant assumptions being made. There are many instances of deus ex machina making the story even more difficult to take seriously. Overall, it seems that this movie suffers the most from being too short or condensed from a larger volume of work. Perhaps it would have been better suited as a long OVA or series to flush out some of the characters and story line.

  • A "what else could possibly go wrong?" survival movie.

Arctic is a pure survival movie that does not rely heavily on an intricate backstory to get viewers engaged. From the beginning, it is clear that this movie is going to be a depiction of pure struggle against the forces of nature. Arctic takes simple tasks of survival and does an excellent job illustrating the determination required to execute those tasks. Mads Mikkelson does an excellent job portraying despair in seemingly insurmountable odds, while also providing a tiny glint of hope that progresses throughout the movie

All in all, Arctic is a thrilling movie about survival and the strength of the human spirit.

  • Implausibility supported by brilliant visuals and non-stop action.

While the premise of this movie is absolutely ridiculous, The Wandering Earth does an impeccable job tearing down even the most skeptical hard-core science fiction movie buff. Even for a science-fiction newbie, this movie provides an brilliant visual display inspired by countless other science fiction tiles in the past spanning multiple decades.

The writing and character development leaves room for improvement, but any casual moviegoer will likely be unphased by the seemingly rushed development of the main characters.

All in all, this movie is visually appealing and the action scenes are thrilling and unique. This movie has very distinct action scenes that set them apart from one another which allow the viewer to remain steadily engaged in the story. When there is this much action in the movie, you might not even care that some of characters can seem a bit one-dimensional.
