For all you wanna-be critics out there trying to be negative about the directing and cinematography, lighten up! This film is excellent in the fact that it does not try to be more than it is... a surf flick. Its obviously not trying to win an Oscar or a bafta. cant any of you simply enjoy a feel good movie? the filming of the waves and the surfing was top class and even though the acting was not Oscar worthy in any way shape or form i think it was impressive that they embraced the surfing culture and used local people in this film.
For all of you out there who like to just enjoy a films and don't feel that you need to be completely baffled, shocked or made to think you will enjoy this. Yes it is predictable but who cares its just a bit of fun.
For all of you who hated this film just because the plot was predictable and the acting was substandard i draw your attention to a gentleman named Sigmund Frued; "Some times a cigar is just a cigar"

The reason i say this is because, in my opinion, on video you can fast forward fast enough and trust me it is needed in this film. Just watch the dancing a boy you will be impressed it is bad ass! A friend of mine got it on DVD because, as a dancer, he wanted to see what it was made of. He is the most critical person of films and as you could expect he ripped the acting and directing to shreds (too right!) but the dancing, ah, his jaw was dropped! I totally agree with him. I now turn to my vote. Imagine, if you will, that the film is split like so; 1)acting, directing, editing and lighting (5) 2)Dancing and soundtrack (5) There we are half marks (for the dancing in case you weren't sure). Frankly id much prefer to think that the voting was all for the dancing and forget that anything else even figured then it would get a 9. If you are a fan of hip hop and break dancing, body popping, krumping etc then you will love the dancing. If only they had cut out all the other stuff it would be great. Thank God its on DVD cause now i can skip to the good scenes and not want to hide my self with shame wasting time watching what can only be described as a less than immature production. Next time just go to LA and film real crews on the streets (the acting will probably be better).
I decided the other day that i wanted to see a film so, i ambled into my local Blockies and browsed for something i hadn't seen. My basic guideline, however, was it needed to have Johnny Depp in it. I adore him! He is a fantastic actor and i knew any film that i chose that had him in it would be worth while. Boy was I right. there it was sitting on the bottom shelf tucked behind classics like the Abyss and Lock Stock but i thought, Meh, what the hell I'll give it a try, i didn't even know what it was about.
Now normally i hate horror movies but this was so good. The story line though loosely based on the history involving Jack the Rippper was very engaging and had twists and turns in it that i had not expected, the only way i figured out who the killer was was the fact that the actor has a very distinct voice, apart from that i was guessing until the end. Sometimes acting left a lot to be desired, it was quite like a school play in some parts where the actors were just hanging around to say their lines there was no real feeling in it and i feel that Heather Graham could have been put to better use. Even though she is good actress i didn't feel that she worked in this film. However the pairing of Robby Coltrane and JD was inspired they worked very well off of each other and made the film that much more worth while. JD seems to be a chameleon when it comes to parts, he just becomes that person and his Cockney was spot on. Johnny Depp will forever be my favorite. To end, I recommend this to anyone who likes movies that are unpredictable.
