Stick with it. Although it might be hard in the first episode to figure out who's who and where this is headed (i.e. Is this going to be comedy, tragedy, mystery?) things start to gel in the 2nd and 3rd episodes. This definitely kept my interest (often difficult in this era of a glut of streaming series) and the acting is among the best. As the series progresses there are some monologues that are riveting. The dialog, casting, directing is superb. And the story itself quite original. To answer the above question - comedy, tragedy, mytery? - while it is all three, it is basically a mystery). But within this mystery there are some really deep truths rarely examined (about relationships, marriage, overcoming fears, etc, etc). Definitely worth sticking with.
... the episodes are just too, too long. Fortunately there are only four of them. But after having invested so much time in episode 1, we went ahead w/ episode 2, and then told ourselves only 2 more episodes to endure ... and 3 was worse than 2 and 4 much worse than 3. Vanessa Incontrada is beautiful and likeable as Capt. Maria. But the plot is beyond ridiculous. Granted, in most fiction you have to suspend belief ...but the degree of
'poetic iicence' called for here is astronomical. And most of the characters are stereotypes (except for the fact that they behave in completely incoherent ways in which real stereotype do not) ... and other than Incontrada - who is not such a bad actor (but I'm no judge) - the rest are just terrible.
Yes, this is highly dated (I'm writing this review 32 years after this series was made). The cinematography is not what we're used to these days. The theme music is corny. The mannerisms of the people are even more dated (the series takes place in the mid-late 1940's). Nevertheless, everything about this production is top notch. The acting, casting, directing, the sets, the writing. The characters are real people. There are no superficial characters. And, as with real people, they often surprise you. The endings often surprise you. This series has great integrity. Hard to explain what I mean by that, but you know it when you see it. (I'm still in Season 2, so this review is probably a bit premature).
