Giving a seven cuz I just watched the first episode, don't want to rock the boat. Casting is perfect. I read the book and they were how I pictured them. But the acting? It looked like they were just reading off of a script (the irony). Like a theatre table read or something. The dialogue sounded so fake. What sounded good on paper may not sound good in film. You need to adapt the script. The show clearly didn't. Pacing is too fast and too slow at the same time?? The first time Frances and Tony met should have been a funny and highly embarrassing interaction, but it felt like a chore on TV. And Carmel?? But maybe the show is going to put emphasis elsewhere. It does have a White Lotus feel. Yao was perfection though. Jason is the real Yao.
Unlike some other viewers, I felt like season 1 & 2 had equally implausible plot with brain dead villains and most convenient coincidence. But I liked it. I wanted to watch a protagonist overpowering everyone, winning at every turn, and I got it. The helicopter scene was funny though. Now onto season 3, and the villains act as if they never had a brain. I don't know if the novel was written all the same but I'm surprised the show didn't try to at least change it up. Quaint small town with a powerful middle aged man. Exposition left and right. Reacher runs from the house to the OCEAN and back. Fun time. I'll finish it just to get it over with.
Maybe it was the soundtrack or the beautiful cinematography, this film played like a Ghibli movie. Whimsical, childlike wonder mixed with unforgiving cruelty and fear. I loved how the past mixed into the present with fond nostalgia. It really warmed up the movie to be about the characters response to their environment, and not just a plot.
The first half of the movie was quite slow. I couldn't have kept going if it wasn't for names attached to the movie. It also read like a budget indie film with its restricted sets and cast, though they worked as isolation was a part of the film.
I think I was lucky going in without knowing anything.
