  • His name is "Drew"

I didn't watch Grimm when it was on originally. I'm a fan of SG-1, reruns of which I watch on Comet, which also carries Grimm, and I see a lot of ads for Grimm while I'm watching SG-1. So I finally decided to binge watch it on Prime Video. The reason.

I'm finding that I'm more interested in the ongoing background story that I am in the "monster of the week". But, y'know, a format's a format.

The reason I'm writing this review here, for this episode, is that it focuses on one of the more interesting characters, I think, Sergeant Wu, or as I call him "Sgt. Exposition", in tribute to Michael York's "Basil Exposition" character in the Austin Powers movies. He's in most of the scenes, it seems, letting us know what's developed, and making most of the jokes. A sort of "utility player".

It's been apparent to me since about the middle of season 2 that they're eventually gonna have to clue Wu in on the whole Wesen thing. (I've actually paused this episode as I write this - I'm 23 minutes in - so I don't know if they did it in this episode or not, but they're dropping hints.) The reason I had to stop and say something because I thought it was hilarious that we finally find out what Wu's first name is, and it's Drew. He's Drew Wu. OK, Andrew Wu, but that's just as good.

A hearty handshake and a pat on the back to the producers.🤔😉😊

  • A little blah...

So, like I say in the title, I thought this episode was a little blah. The escarghost storyline was as cute as that portmaneau, but they didn't seem to do much with it. Maybe they couldn't. It was a snail. The very last shot, where Trevor decides to stop watching it get sucked off because it took too long, seemed weak at first but kinda grew on me after a while.

I was disappointed in the direction that they took regarding Isaac's book. I think I was turned off by the idea that they would try to write anything in this *250-year-old invaluable historical American artifact, irrespective of how many blank pages it held* (that all would have been bolded if I could have in this review). They could have used the existence of Isaac's diary as a jumping-off point for a whole new variation on that storyline. (Sam: "Y'know, Isaac, the publisher is going to want some kind of source documentation for most of this." Isaac: "Well, I have a diary..." Jay: "An actual, physical diary? Museums would love that, it would be amazingly valuable.") I thought turning it into a vampire story was a copout.

Too bad, that seems to put the end to the "Sam's book about Isaac" storyline. I thought they could've done more with that.🤔😉😊

  • Not all that bad, but allowances must be made

I'm watching this on Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I'm just going to talk about the film, not the MST3K treatment, which has been discussed by others here.

This production really isn't all that bad, really, for a German TV production from 1960 (or 1961, depending on where you look), but one needs to make allowances. It stars Maximilian Schell as Hamlet (with Ricardo Mantelban doing some dubbing work - it sounds like Schell dubbing for Hamlet). This is right around Schell's appearance in "Judgment at Nuremberg". He's a fine actor, and does a pretty reasonable job.

All in all, it does seem a little stiff and dry. But as I said, you need to make allowances. This is a German TV production, with the look of a PBS production, not surprisingly, given when it was produced and by whom (not produced by Mike Myers' Dieter, but it could have been). Kind of a Eurotrash vibe. The sets are amazingly sparse, as if it were shot in a TV studio with a very limited budget, which I expect it was. The play itself had been translated into German for the production, and then this version was dubbed back into English, so it looks kind of clumsy. It also was apparently shot on black & white video tape, during its short-lived era in the early 60s. A major motion picture, it ain't.

Is it great? No, not hardly. Is it horrible? Also, no. Look at it more like an artifact, which is how the MST3K people treated it. 🤔😉😊
