It's fairly common opinion that the MCU has been in decline since Endgame. The tone of their projects has shifted significantly with seemingly a focus on bringing in a "new generation of fans" which has mostly felt like it's alienated those of us who've been with them since the beginning. F4 changes that - it feels a far more "grown-up" comic book film (if that's not a massive oxymoron) with a more serious tone than much of what has come before it. In fact, it's more similar, totally, to Winter Soldier than anything from Phase 5. This is good. Very good, in fact. It gives us hope. Maybe we can go back to watching Marvel films without complaining they've been scripted by AI, for 5yr-olds.
I had hope. Genuinely, I did. I didn't hate the Snyder movies, but while I thought Cavill made an excellent, stoic, Superman, he did not have the range to add the necessary contrast as Clark Kent.
Corenswet seems to play Superman closer to Clark; we don't see much of his secret identity in this movie, but his Superman demonstrates far more vulnerability than we are used to - not just physically, but emotionally. I think I understand why Gunn has approached the character in this way, but I can't say it completely works for me. Far better in the second half, however, so perhaps there is hope for future outings.
Krypto, however, is a revelation. It's everybody's dumb-but-loveable dog, on screen - that he can fly doesn't really matter, it's still our dog.
Hoult also deserves mention as perhaps the best Luthor we've seen.

It's bad. Worse than She-Hulk. Worse than Ms Marvel. Worse than if you combined the worst aspects of both She-Hulk and Ms Marvel into one series, and made them even worse.
I don't know how Disney/Marvel can keep getting the tone so wrong with these shows. They clearly aren't trying to appeal to the same fan base who loved the Infinty Saga, yet it feels like a middle-aged writing committee's attempt to appeal to a younger audience.
I went in with an open mind, but honestly can't see myself continuing with the rest of the series.
I'd like to finish on a high, but I genuinely can't think of anything redeeming about this show.
