I can only assume that this movie was meant to be satire and/or dark humor but ultimately it was just boring. Apparently the film makers felt repeatedly killing the same character over and over again (not in new and interesting ways mind you, but basically the same way. Over and over again.) would be funny and/or interesting but ultimately it was just dull. This is a science fiction movie with hardly any time spent in space, an alien world that is basically just snow, aliens that look like a lump of flesh and absolutely zero technology. Even the all important "human cloning machine" is described as a printer and is basically a big box. This is what we get when average (at best) film makers receive undeserved academy awards. I gave it 2 stars because Robert Patterson does his best with a boring script and terrible direction. Skip this and thank me later for saving you 2 hours.
I'll start by saying this movie has some of the best special effects of it's time. Really top notch production. Unfortunately, the producers thought special effects are enough to make a great movie and, in turn, hired a sub-par writer to create the script. There is no story and, it's push forward by two dimensional, cartoon characters spouting catch phrases as they lumber towards the next "twister". So, these are suppose to be scientists whom, we assume, have attended some sort of post-secondary education and, after all that study, now spend their days blasting classic rock and calling each other clever nicknames like "the extreme". It's totally tubular! The serious characters (i.e. The bad guys) are totally lost and spend the entire movie following the "cool" guys as they drive fast towards the next "twister". The absolute worst is what they did to Philip Seymour Hoffman. They literally took one of the greatest actors of his generation and reduced him to a bumbling joke. This is what happens when "movie executives" are allowed to make creative decisions. Anyways, they drive a bunch and almost die a ton while the bad guys get lost multiple times and, at the end, you're left wondering what could have been. Come for the special effects but don't be surprised if you leave disappointed at all the wasted talent that went into making this disaster movie.
